I just autistically went through 2 local cinemas prebooking seat selections and Captain Marvel is the only one with any significant number of seats already bought. During almost every showing possible except weird early Friday times. My cinemas are showing lots of other movies, but they know what's going to draw in a crowd for this weekend and it's not Greta.

Alita has 4 viewings at my theatre on Thursday. A total of 2 tickets have been sold. One for each of the two latest showings. Exact same seat, all the way in the back, leading me to guess it's some foreveralone neckbeard watching it twice in a row. Alone. Seething while everyone else watches Captain Marvel. Or jacking off. Whichever. Hope he has a fun time.

I have, it's full of hilarious backhanded compliments. 2/3 of the 'fresh' reviews read like they were written under duress, it's genuinely the most enjoyable part of the whole ride so far.

I have a feeling this will be less successful here than in the US.
The movie-going culture is quite different here. Americans will go to the movies as a weekly outing, often not even knowing what movie they will choose to see until they arrive. The trip to the cinema is cemented in, as a social excursion, regardless of what movie is playing.
Over here I find that people generally don't do that, they will only go when there is a specific movie they desire to watch.
If people do not want to see captain marvel, they will wind up with empty theatres for the weekend. It's not a completely captured market of goys who will throw money at their local kinoplex no matter what trash is playing.

They'll demand to show as much of their releases as much/as long as possible or threaten to blacklist the theatre which would mean the theatre loses the 60% of blockbuster movies a year that are from Disney.

Mate, the way things work is that theater chains arent going to piss on it because of all what Disney owns so if Disney wants to have a grand opening day they can simply because the chains will accept it knowing that means when time comes for the money makers (that being the Pixar and actual Disney movies) since they played ball Disney will do it too.

This aint news, studios and distributors have done this for decades with packages, Captain Marvel is part of a package and it doesnt matter if nobody goes watch it because the other movies will pack the house, they can take the hit.

Nigger. Theaters stand to lose MORE if everyone sees a movie in the first week or two since the studio gets the majority of the profits. This is just bullshit pandering or a deal from Disney that gives more of a cut to theaters who opt in to this. To take a big film on release, you have to guarantee a certain number of screens and a certain number of shows. The bigger the film and the lower the age rating, the more shows this entails (if you take something like Deadpool 2, with a higher certificate, the deals are slightly less severe due to the reduced business). So for a tentpole blockbuster that's suitable for everyone, you'll be showing it a hell of a lot, and paying a very high percentage of the ticket profit to the studios. Smaller cinemas in particular will end up showing nothing else for several days, or taking it week two, three, etc, for a less strict deal and better percentage of ticket sales. This is not unusual with the current cinema model. But to think that one film is creating a new stranglehold on cinemas is absurd.
