>The photograph depicts United States Air Force Lt Col Robert L. Stirm being reunited with his family, after spending more than five years in captivity as a prisoner of war in North Vietnam.
>Despite outward appearances, the reunion was an unhappy one for Stirm. Three days before he arrived in the United States, the same day he was released from captivity, Stirm received a Dear John letter from his wife Loretta informing him that their marriage was over. Stirm later learned that Loretta had been with other men throughout his captivity, receiving marriage proposals from three of them. In 1974, the Stirms divorced and Loretta remarried, but Lt Col Stirm was still ordered by the courts to provide her with 43% of his military retirement pay once he retired from the Air Force. Stirm was later promoted to full Colonel and retired from the Air Force in 1977.
After Burst of Joy was announced as the winner of the Pulitzer Prize, all of the family members depicted in the picture received copies. They all display it prominently in their homes, except the Stirm patriarch, who says he cannot bring himself to display the picture, given the betrayal he suffered from his wife on the home front.

>After Robert Stirm’s return, his wife of nearly 20 years managed to capitalize on their subsequent divorce. Loretta was given custody of two of their four children, the family home, and nearly half of Stirm’s pension. At the time, Stirm remarked: “It’s not fair. It’s just not. I’m the one that lives with all the aches and pains from my imprisonment, but she continues to get paid.” That certainly makes the fact that Loretta is there in the photograph, smiling wide at her then-husband, all the more painful. Even his children had trouble with his return.
>His daughter, Lorrie, was quoted as saying: “So much had happened—there was so much that my dad missed out on—and it took a while to let him back into our lives and accept his authority.”

>Robert Stirm never liked to look at "Burst of Joy." For him, it wasn't a joyous moment surreptitiously captured; it was a bitter reminder of everything he endured and everything he lost when he came home. He refused to hang the photograph in his home, and when asked about it, he described his feelings as “ambivalent.” As a POW, Stirm thought relentlessly about coming home to his family, and it was those thoughts that kept him alive in the face of torture.
>The heart of the tragedy that is Robert Stirm’s perspective on "Burst of Joy" is the letter his ex-wife Loretta Stirm wrote him only three days before his return home. In it, she details their unhappy marriage and how they only managed to “make each other miserable.” She did not think they were suited for each other.
>They did reportedly try to make their marriage work after Stirm’s homecoming, but divorced after a year.

His grandson replied to this article and conviently leaves out how his grandfather got cucked in the divorce:
>To those that touched on his first wife's (and my grandmother) "infidelity", I think everyone should know that his children and their mother did not know the status of their father/husband. He was a POW for 6 years, and for 6 long years his 4 children grew up being told by the military that they had no idea where their father was or if he was alive. They were never told that he was being held as a POW, or if he would ever return, or he was even alive or dead. The same went for his wife, who had struggled as a homemaker who had never paid bills or managed family matters until her husband left for Vietnam. After several years of heartache and struggle, life played it's course and a new relationship developed for Loretta. The "Dear John" letter was written so that Loretta could come to terms that her husband was not coming back and that life was moving on, she wrote it expecting him to never see it, as she heartbreakingly believed she would never see him again. Upon his return, she broke off her relationship and attempted to salvage her broken family now that all of the pieces had physically been put back together. Unfortunately, the marriage would not survive, and both remarried (Col. Stirm divorced in the last 10 years, and Loretta passed away from Cancer in 2010, still married to the same man she had met while Col. Stirm was a POW). This is an extremely sensitive family matter, and I beg all who choose to comment publicly, to please refrain from passing judgement on either person with regards to the relationship between Col. Robert Stirm & Loretta. Thank you.

To me it sounds like he and his mother sided with his Grandmother in the divorce. It's the only way I can make sense out of how he talks about his Grandfather so dispassionately and how he can leave out how his Grandmother tried to ruin him financially. As if it were ok, that this man who was a POW for 6 years, never knowing if he'd see home again, or his wife and kids again, and be tortured and abused in a Vietnamese prison camp, if it was ok to just do him dirty like his Grandmother did. Could you imagine how hopeless it must have felt, as you assumed you may never see freedom again, and perhaps may die in some shithole country.

Stirm describing what it was like being a POW
>Stirm was shot down over Hanoi, October, 1968. He was 35 years old. He was immediately captured and imprisoned. He spent the next 1,985 days as a POW. He was originally held in the Son Tay prison and was later moved to a prison commonly referred to as the Hanoi Hilton. He survived the six years next to highly trained Air Force officers — lawyers, doctors and scientists.
>The hundreds of men in captivity were fed "sauteed sewer greens,” pumpkin soup and ground-up pig remains. They were "sadistically” tortured. At one point, Stirm said he was nearly drawn and quartered. He survived that incident with two dislocated shoulders, he said.
>Many of the U.S. soldiers were kept in solitary confinement. They were forced to communicate with each other through a tap code that did not need the "dash” used in Morris Code. The soldiers would signal each other by tapping "Shave and a Hair Cut.” If the double-dash signifying two bits came back, the soldiers were free of enemy ears, Stirm said.
>"It sounded like you were in the press room with all the typewriters,” Stirm said. "Every night we’d tap good night and God bless.”
Jonathan Gomez
>military wives Why even bother? It always ends like that.
Christian Sanchez
>Advanced survival training helped keep Stirm and many of his fellow soldiers alive.
>They were all trained to memorize the names of every other imprisoned soldier. Stirm would recite approximately 250 names alphabetically, twice a day, he said.
>"You’ve got to keep you mind busy. I tried to recreate my life. I reconstructed my kindergarten class, first grade ... It’s all in your mind,” Stirm said.
>As an older POW, Stirm felt it necessary to lift the spirits of others. As Stirm saw it, he has already had the chance to marry and have children. There were younger POWs who drove themselves to despair thinking of what they might miss if never rescued. It was Stirm, and others like him, that helped those men survive.
He figured he had to cheer up the other younger soldiers who may never get married or have kids...
Nolan Harris
Imagine being so cucked that you leave your wife & kids to go to Vietnam just because the government asks you to.

>Stirm, a 1950 graduate of San Mateo High School and an alumnus of College of San Mateo, grew up in leafy San Mateo Park. His horrific prison experience was a far cry from the suburban comforts of his family home on quiet Clark Drive.
>Tortured, starved and denied meaningful medical care, Stirm, at one grim point, weighed less than 100 pounds, but he managed to survive.
>Stirm is classified as 100 percent disabled. He suffers from chronic joint problems, particularly in his compromised shoulders, knees and feet (he was hung by his arms, with his shoulders stretched out of their sockets, and beaten and struck regularly, among other punishments).
>“Name a disease,” he adds, “and I probably had it.” Three times, he says he was taken in front of a firing squad for what seemed to be a scheduled execution. All three occasions were cruel ruses to get him to divulge information. He says he didn’t do so.
>“I was one of the more senior officers,” he recalls. “For some reason, they thought I had a direct line to (President) Lyndon Johnson. I was a hard-liner. I lived with my information throughout the period.”
>Asked if he has come to terms with the behavior of his brutal captors and his systematic wartime mistreatment and imprisonment, the blunt Stirm, who has not returned to Vietnam since his release, categorically states, “No.” He does not elaborate.

>Embittered by his wife’s action against him, Stirm chose to fight for custody of all his children and resist her demands for her share of the community property. “Loretta got $136,000 in government allotments while I was in Vietnam,” he told the court, “and I want a share of it. I haven’t shared in any community in six-and-a-half years. I was sitting in that rotten, stinking hole.” Loretta, 38, asked for 50% of virtually everything Stirm owned, including half the $9,830 POW allotment granted him by the U.S. government to compensate for time spent in confinement and half his Air Force pension. “All those dreams I had in prison were nothing but dust,” Stirm complained angrily. “I’ve been taken to the cleaners.”
>Stung by his wife’s lawsuit, he countered with evidence that she’d been unfaithful. “Mrs. Stirm was…human,” her lawyer admitted. “It was not unusual for POW wives to become emotionally involved with others during the absence of their husbands.”
>Last month came the judge’s decision, and for Stirm it was a galling defeat. His wife was awarded custody of Cindy and Roger, plus the Stirms’ $24,000 suburban home and their car. Stirm must pay $300 a month child support. In addition, he was ordered to hand over 40% of whatever pension he will eventually receive. Although the court denied Loretta a share of his POW allotment and refused any alimony claim, it ruled nothing could be done about the $136,000 she’d already received. She was ordered to pay back $1,500 she’d spent traveling with other men, but Stirm was hardly mollified. “I’d like someone—maybe the federal government—to step forward and grant me my constitutional rights,” he declared bitterly. “My service was honorable; hers was not.”
Because the legal system assumes women are homemakers, not breadwinners. The man isn’t doing anything with that money - not now he’s divorced - so clearly it should go to the divorcee who would otherwise be bereft of funds while caring for children.
It’s the same reason women almost always get custody of the children. Because the legal system is horribly biased and assumes men are knuckle-dragging wifebeaters and women are battered housewives who think University is where you go to “meet eligible men.”

I know it’s kind of weird to hear but infidelity rates have gone DOWN since the 90’s, not up. Go talk to your grandpa and ask if he ever fooled around outside his girlfriend/wife and he’ll either dodge the question or brag about it.
It was just something everyone did then
James Sullivan
She was left to struggle financially and psychologically by herself, it's only basic human decency that he should make it up to her
Easton Murphy

Gavin Barnes
logic goes out the window when a woman cries
Luke Powell
>no color
Way to fail.
Lincoln Cruz
Men can be assholes too but that women deserves everything bad she gets for the rest of her life.
Andrew Long
Nigga I said grandpa, not grandma. This is the literal truth of history.
Ayden Diaz
He said grandpa you dumb fuck.
Justin Sanders
>this woman is fucking whore in particular >oh nononono everyone is a fucking whore back then it says right here in the statistic so she should get a pass I'll drag you by the neck over the street until you're dust
Ayden Cox
>risk your lives and precious years in the service of geriatric armchair generals and corporate execs >your gf/wife cucks you while you dodge bullets in some shithole on the other side of the globe >all in the name of loyalty and pride for an abstract concept conjured by beltway pansies Americucks everyone.
Connor Roberts
It wasn't a woman you idiot. Are you so stupid you don't know what grandPA is?
Camden Smith
If there's one thing I learned from my time in the Navy, it's that you should never get seriously involved while you're enlisted. The female enlisted always jump on the cocks of whoever the chads of the squadron are (in my case, it was the Search-and-Rescue guys), and all the guys get whores when they hit port, from the most junior enlisted, to the CO. There's also bars in San Diego that you can go to that are known watering holes of "Westpac Widows", aka "wives of guys who are currently on a 6+ month deployment, and are looking for a random Jody to fuck".
Ryder Ramirez
As someone in the military, who fucking hates it, this doesn't surprise me. If you're married 5-10 years you're entitled to 50% of the pension (half your salary for life) he would get. It's why so many end up living in trailer homes on bases after retirement. That and pissing away money and falling into debt because they're man children. Most senior enlisted are divorced at least once and get cucked on deployment
Ethan Rodriguez
I guess if there's any solace to be taken, it's that cancer eventually did her in.
Jason Stewart
>HURRR DURR HE FOUGHT FOR FREEDUMS AND JUSTICE BY FLYING HALFWAY ACROSS THE WORLD AND SHOOTING GOOK FARMERS Only faggots went to Vietnam to fight for the jew. I hope his wife got properly BLACKED in the meantime
Christian Diaz
was Islam the first beta uprising?
Christopher Davis
It's either that, or get thrown in prison. It's not like the dude could just opt out.
Andrew Wright
Lol seriously. Women are a complete meme.
Josiah Cox
Yeah, going to war and potentially dying is so much better than going to prison.
If you serve in the military in the peace times you set yourself upon to get cucked like this. It's a price for a decent livelihood despite having no education and being fucking stupid.
Ryan Peterson
>Yeah, going to war and potentially dying is so much better than going to prison and then having to spend the rest of your life flipping burgers, because nobody will hire you with your military record, not to mention losing a bunch of rights and government benefits.
ftfy. Anyway, it's a little difficult to be a "contentious objector" when you've got a family to take care of.
Hunter Sanchez
>and then having to spend the rest of your life flipping burgers, because nobody will hire you with your military record, not to mention losing a bunch of rights and government benefits. Because this is somehow worse than dying or becoming an invalid who has to give half of his retirement benefits to a cunt who cheated on him with three different people at least? Face it. There's is no reason to go to war.
Benjamin Sanchez
More like Incelam
Joseph Fisher
All you had to do was say you're gay, or mentally unfit.
No. She divorced so she gets alimony. That's how it works in America.
Asher Barnes
>government benefits
OH GEE GOLLY GEE THE SAME I WOULD GET IF I WAS UNEMPLOYED AND HAD NO MONEY? Dumb fuck.
Alexander Wood
he was a Lieutenant so yeah he volunteered. They don't draft officers. You are still replying to bait, though
Austin Price
I'll add that to my list sir
Julian Rodriguez
Yeah I guess loretta was a good person after all and she only cheated and ditched her husband because she "heartbreakingly" (as if she had one) thought she would never see him again. I guess while she's at it, she may as well take half of all his shit after gleefully accepting his money from the government for 5 years while riding the cock carousel. If she had a shred of decency she should have accepted that the divorce was entirely on her, and she had no entitlement to anything Stirm has earned. The fact that she even filed for half of his god damn POW allotment just show what an atrocious person she really was. This guy just can't accept that his grandma was a fucking psychopathic whore who deserved to rot from cancer and burn in hell.
Ryder Reed
>they would instantly cheat, and within a year or two of his coming back they divorce him and take him for half his guaranteed pay. Since this behavior seems prevalent, isn't there some kind of law or military rule for preventing it?
Ayden Long
Fantastic post
Xavier Torres
>take this upvote and gold, good sir could you be more reddit?

>laws protecting men from thieving, greedy women amid the legalities of a divorce
AH HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA
Angel Ramirez
Because it was literally never, at any point, about any kind of "equality". From its beginning it has been a supremacy movement.
Justin Moore
No it wasn't
Colton Young
>Previous generations were draconian christard prudes and moralists! >Previous generations were cheating left, right and center, all the time!
I wish I knew which it was. People are now telling me it was both.
Anthony Lopez

This can be a good karma comedy style movie: >Burger napalms some random chinks, he doesn't care who he hits with fiery death >Gets shot down and captured, turns some of the guards have napalm'd relatives so they chew on that burger a little bit >Returns home, takes huge money because "MUH POW", thinks his life will be awesome from now on >Dear John >Ending is him angrily fucking a chink whore only to get lynched by anti-war hippies when he leaves the brothel There is a kind of lesson to learn here.
Luis Moore
3/10 Mediocre opening and terrible finish.
Caleb Roberts
>His daughter, Lorrie, was quoted as saying: “So much had happened—there was so much that my dad missed out on—and it took a while to let him back into our lives and accept his authority.” He was fucking tortured by gooks in a jungle for 5 years, what the fuck is wrong with these people
Matthew Gonzalez
it would be justifiable if he shoot up a school
Nathan Wood
why a school? The divorce court and his wife though, yes
Xavier Bennett
This is just infuriating, jesus christ. And to think very little has actually changed when it comes to divorce laws.
