It seemed fairly clear by just watching the film that the gimp was in some sort of a consensual sex slave arrangement with both Zed and Maynard. To your point, this was not necessarily a 24/7 arrangement, but the dungeon is lived-in, and the three men were obviously very comfortable and spent a good amount of time there doing gay BDSM shit. I take the shop and dungeon space to be exclusively Maynard's (was Zed part of the shop's business?), and where the gimp is kept under normal circumstances. This seeming three-way relationship is quite odd. There is a clear dominance hierarchy: Zed, Maynard, gimp. Maynard's very first action upon successfully neutralizing an armed conflict on his own terms, is to call up his buddy: "hey I got these guys and we can fuck with them." Then Zed comes in, grabs Maynard by his scruff, and tells him what to do in his (Maynard's) own house. Maynard orders the thing out of its box, but then it kneels at Zed's side, first. Even though that's the scariest possibility to think about, I don't think that would work. Butch escapes pretty fast from those ropes which tells me they don't actually get to capture people very often, they are dangerous people and they fuck with people, but this is literally their fetish, including the gimp.
