Rewatching now and Season 1 is definitely slower than I remember it.

I used to think it was my favorite because I loved how grounded Walt was as a character, but the first few episodes are kinda a drag with some exceptions

I loved the series up through the end of the 4th season, Season 5 was a chore to get through and the conclusion felt kind of half-assed (though Mike's death was kino).

if you want to fanwank about it you could say that once upon a time he recognized this trait in himself and so he settled into a "safe" mundane lifestyle
like you have a flashback where he says to Skyler "you know, maybe I just wasn't cut out for that kind of... high-pressure environment"
then by the time the show begins he's forgotten his true nature and envisions himself to be a kingpin of chemistry
this sets up his tragic arc from the beginning - he was always doomed to fail!
it also adds more resonance to the number of times he just plain gets lucky. instead of Jesse hanging a lampshade on it with "YOU DON'T GET IT! HE ALWAYS WINS!"
