He's pretty wonderful. I like they gave his character Ido a little more resonance and sympathy from before and Waltz pulls the tragic father really well. The scene where he admits to becoming a hunter warrior to kill his demon or really just hoping he'd be killed by him is great.

I loved this movie

For once a big movie where it's not preaching about the dangers of toxic masculinity, the dad is actually a good guy with no shit on him and alita being a dearie made the action better because she's actually likeable.

the first 30 minutes or so are clunky, very truncated early 2000's adaptationy feel with sports montages, setting estabilishing, character introduction, that sort of thing, which isn't that bad, once she and dad fight the robots in the alley the movie starts to get going and never stop.

I also like the Ben Hur Charriot Race-esque set piece with the motorball match, not zoning out during an action sequence that you can tell what's going on is always good.

See it in 3D and sit close to the screen. You will enjoy a depth and detail to the intricately designed 3D models that is highly uncommon in film.

I typically share the same sentiment, but this movie makes good use of it. For certain parts of the movie you get a serious level of depth perception that is difficult to not appreciate. But for the rest it's almost interchangeable with regular 2D. But the 3D parts are worth a couple dollars extra. Not $10 extra, though, if that's what your theater offers.

Since I've now re-watched this movie, I can point out that in the assault scene, an URM ship is crashing to the ground right next to where Alita's team is scaling the mooring tube. It suggests that they're forced to use that route of attack.

There are also URM ships bombarding Zalem from above. They seem to be making some damage, but not enough then maybe?

You're comparing Waltz being subdued due to being a character that isn't about action despite being a hunter himself to Brenda who simply had no character for Salazar to act out in that trashy movie (because let's be real nobody had character in SCARCH or any of those movies). Waltz's performance comes in body language and subtler mimic leaving most of screaming, emoting and everything else to Alita.

I think I might just like waltz in general because I liked him in this and I've pretty much liked him in everything I've seen him in. Django, Inglorious, and this.

IIRC Villeneuve said he likes films that give the viewer plenty of opportunities to think. I suppose if you do not believe there's much to think about in BR2049 or if that's not what you look for in a film and prefer a faster pace, then I could see how it would appear pretentious.

You're doing something similar, but you're trying to seat waltz' flat delivery and basic non-presence in his own scenes as some sort of masterclass of acting.

The implication is that Alita's ship was shot down, and that ship that she retrieved the Berserker from was her's.

On the contrary, I like when it is open to interpretation, like the original Blade Runner, I often find meaning and interpretation on films that may not have one, like Life (I loved this film because I attributed meaning and symbolism that I'm not in the mood to write now), or attach my own meaning, like in All Is Lost (another good one, I won't write it now). It's just that Villeneuve is forced, but that's my opinion

The idea that was a spare body is a little undermined by how the entire ship looked like a containment unit for one single body.

Life was rubbish though. All I could think of while watching it was "How many tropes are they going to use in this film?"

My interpretation was about hubris
Hubris on nature, hubris by scientists, hubris on society, hubris by society
Followed by nemesis, since everyone who commited the hubris got punished by the unstoppable force of nature that was the alien
Personally I find it an exceptional film when studied under my interpretation (but I think this is just me giving meaning to something that doesn't have)
It was my favourite film of 2017
