The point is that Bojack, no matter how hard he tries to improve himself and get his shit together, still manages to sink even lower. It's a metaphor on how some things just can't be fixed no matter how hard we try or what we do.

The early first season's mostly comedic, though starting from Season 2 it starts getting more serious though still retains a bit of its comedy. Honestly Season 4 is the show's peak, and it's been going downhill since S5.

Name one show more densely packed with the multi-level humor of Bojack? I'm guessing you've only watched the show once, and probably didn't get past the first season (which feels almost as shitty as a piece of MacFarlane garbage for the first half). Watching it only once you're going to miss at least half the jokes.

no I got the jokes, they just didn't make me laugh. A couple made me smirk but that's about it. If anything they're a nice little distraction from the drama.

I never said that. I said that you need to rewatch the show multiple times to catch everything, and the reason is because the writers pay a lot of attention to continuity, so little things in season 1 will come back in season 4 or 5, which recontextualize season 1 (because it skips around in time a lot). There are a number of animal jokes that sometimes require kind of obscure knowledge about certain animals to catch.
