Despite the memes, I think people here are definitely smarter on average. I rarely interact with normal people on anything but a professional level, but when I do, it's amazing to me how fucking gullible regular people are. That isn't to say people on here aren't gullible as well, but I think 4channers at least attempt to learn from their mistakes if they found out they've been had. They also generally have a basic understanding of self-preservation on the internet, such as maintaining your privacy and KNOWING how to maintain it.
