If this story was any good the ultimate battle wouldn't be against the enemy that was set up from the very beginning. You could skip seasons 2 through 7 and all that's changed is some more people died. There's been practically no plot development except some people's teleporting around and some ebin deaths

I thought one of the central themes of the series is death and rebirth. “Winter is Coming” and all that. White walkers represent the omnipresent threat of death that hangs over all of human kind. Humankind must stave off death in the end. But the white walkers won’t be totally defeated. It’ll be revealed as a big cycle or something, like there’s a long night every 1000 yrs.

As we learned from TLJ, subverting expectations is not a satisfying end in and of itself. A work must have its own theme or thing to say in order to be satisfying.

That concept is so played out

GOT doesn't have themes. The books do, sure, but the tv show doesn't and the writers have said it doesn't.
