But that's part of what makes it a legitimately good movie. You think it's an action comedy about this everyman fighting the parts of modern society that piss us off. Then it turns out he's not the nice everyman and his anger is becoming focused on his ex-wife. It adds gravity to the movie.

I don't think it's a simple tale. Well adjusted people wouldn't snap and start beating up store clerks and robbing burger joints. I've lost jobs and had my car break down, and I own an Uzi, and I haven't run around causing trouble. It makes more sense the dude had anger issues all along and the movie was the climax of his breakdown following the divorce and losing his job.

I won't deny that the movie would be a lot less memorable if it just ended up as some kind of revenge porn, but I really don't like the message the movie ultimately is conveying to us. Okay, the angry everyman turns out to be a crazed sociopath, but then what alternative does it give us as our protagonist? The cop? He's cucked by his shitty overbearing job, cucked by his asshole boss, cucked by his fat annoying stupid wife. He's going to end up wasting his golden years in some shithole that he hates because he's too spineless to take a stand anywhere in his life. Maybe Michael Douglas is overreacting a bit to all of the bullshit he has to put up with, but the cop is just bad a role model for the exact opposite reasons. Yet it seems like the movie is holding the cop up as who we should aspire to be. That's not right.

Having anger issues isn't the same as being a total psycho who spends every day pretending to go to work at a job that he got fired from a long time ago.
And the "twist" does cheapen the movie. A good twist should make something more interesting, not less. All it does is say "lmao nvm, story = random loon goes around does random loon things lol". A story about a guy cracking under the pressure of the high-stress modern world is more interesting.

I always assumed the movie did that on purpose. The guy who appears to be a likeable man of action turns out to be a nut and the guy who everyone knows is a passive coward ends up saving the day. Neither one is held up as a rolemodel. They just are who they are. People in real life have poorly defined roles.

Wasn't that supposed to show a gradual deterioration, not just "he was always crazy?" The anger issues, the divorce, the job, and then the events of the movie. It's a guy sliding into insanity and not recognizing what's happening to him.

I just skimmed the movie again and they didn't spring the anger issues on us 2/3 of the way in. He calls his wife at about 25m and it's obvious there's something wrong with him.

Judging from the work reveal and the tapes from a while ago, he's been batshit from the beginning. No slow decline. The story is just "crazy dude is crazy and does crazy things"

The Captain is actually the most sympathetic character in the film. He's a successful, strong, handsome type-A personality who has no fear calling out Pendergast for being an underachieving coward. People in real life who accomplish their dreams through strength of character are like him. Some of you guys might be missing the point. DFENS obviously wasn't completely there, but he had a point in everything he did. The end pretty much summarizes it for me. He did what he got told to do, he made things that were useful (more useful than the plastic surgeons) and he ended up a loser.

The detective is like DFENS, he did what he was expected to do, but the detective gave in. He didn't revolt against society and the system, he gave in and became a "productive" member of society. I like to think that DFENS and the detective are a lot more similar than people think, but they took divergent paths
