It's jarring. And really fucking ahead of it's time. People were invested in these characters and just wanted some closure for the titular character even if it meant showing that he gets capped. Most folks wanted some grand scene where Tony goes down in slow motion with some 70s rock song playing and maybe even fade to black there. No one was looking at this shit:

I watched it at the time of broadcast (iO Cable, this is important) and it was a big event, whole family was watching it. During the broadcast there was a handful of moments where the cable had issue streaming, causing a few pauses, glitchy video, or weirdness and evne a few black cuts. When the ending came around this was something that people had seen a lot of. The thing is too it was an insanely popular broadcast - for this reason it was probably a lot of peoples return to the show, watching it segmented and only catching a handful of episodes here and there. They likely missed those key moments in the final season - especially when Tony was talking with Bobby.
It works when you have the whole picture, but if you're expecting some mob movie finale you're selling yourself short by missing out on everything before that point.

Early seasons Sopranos is definitely more conventional. You could argue seasons 1-2 are slightly dated, but they are still excellent.
Later seasons of The Sopranos (4-6) is the best television ever, period. I'm still in awe at the ambitiousness of the final season.
