I somewhat lucked out at the start because a high profile TV show actively needed people. Just from talking with people while on set you hear what film is going into pre-production, or whats rumored to be coming, then from there you can start finding out who's on it then finding ways to contact department heads if you don't already know them for 'crewing'.

For most of the crew it's for sure a middle class existence. Luckily I get to work on some of the bigger films which usually run 5-6 months. So maybe doing one big job then one 3 month job a year is usually good enough. Overtime is a blessing a curse though. Crunch time towards the end of filming usually means 6/7 day weeks, but the double-time makes up for it.
