I think it's pretty obvious this movie failed to really hit because most people just didn't give it time of day. Those who went to see it, usually love it. Advertisment campaign was probably completely scuffed. This franchise will be all about legs. Luckily, there's virtually no stakeholders besides Cameron's own Lightstorm and Fox, the latter being basically just a distributor and not an owner by any means, it's all up to whether Cameron's clout will be enough to secure funding for something that clearly has legs to stand on.
I mean, shit, they made a sequel to Pacific Rim (bad one, but still) and greenlit a sequel to Edge of Tomorrow.
