I thought it was actually pretty smart writing. Daryl and the deaf girl managed to get the first strike against the Whisperers, who were already planning to attack Hilltop, so anything to weaken them is helpful. As of now the Whisperers have no way of knowing why that attack happened. For all they know it was just bad luck and Lydia got lost in the forest in the chaos afterwards while Henry used it as an opportunity to escape. Rescuing Henry is good because he can tell Daryl how there are tons of Whisperers and they're going to attack Hilltop.
