I really appreciate how the first two movies handled her character.
She wasn't brave or physically strong because that wasn't the point. She was always scared shirtless and was usually powerless to save her friends or compatriots, but at the end of the day, she persevered and did whatever she could to save the most vulnerable members of her group. It's her maternal instincts that kicked in and lead her to become the hero.
I love both Alien and Aliens for this reason. They're probably the best examples of how a female character's maternal instincts lead them to commit great acts of heroism.
