The BPRD was a bit too much movie MiB. Yet this movie seems to have taken all those things Del Toro got somewhat wrong and made them ten times worse with none of the charm he brought from the books.

Maybe we never knew how good we had it with Del Toro keeping the studio hands at bay. We never knew how bad it could get.

Going off of current trends, the safest bet right now is a PG-13 action spectacle with fantasy/sci-fi elements and a quipy, irreverent tone. It's a template that's done gangbusters for Marvel and your average soiboi clearly still isn't sick of it since they just eat that shit up. Hellboy is moderately well-known, while also being old enough for a reboot, and so it's very easy to take it the existing comic-book style, crank up the quips, throw some Korean sweatshop CGI at it and call it a day

The problem is that Del Toro is a very creative guy, and I'm not sure if he is capable of 'just' making an faithful adaptation. His Hellboy movies are good, but they are not comic adaptation - they are Del Toro's Hellboy.
