She watched it silently. At the end, she looked up at me with her tear stained face, and said with awe and surprise:"Mom, she is like me. She is just like me. Look at her, she is beautiful, and a normal girl. Mom, she is like me. She has already done it. I can too!" Then she gave me one of her rib crushing hugs. I had no idea she worried about transition (I knew I had worried). We cried together for a while, then watched every single video Jazz had. Then watched them again.
There have been many amazing activist trans youth since, many brave families that have stepped into the public eye. I am thankful for them all. But. The Jennings were our Magellan.They blazed the way for my family and many like ours. Jazz is far from just an advocate. She is a warrior. She is a hero. She is a tiny young woman with the spirt of a Valkyrie. And personally, we owe her and her family nothing short of everything. We are able to step up and fight today, because of all the yesterdays they fought for us all. Most of you have no idea the strength, power, and grace that is Jazz Jennings. There is much I could say about grown men attacking a teenaged girl on internet forums. I will leave that unsaid. You're unimportant men with irrelevant opinions.
