The Japs didn't understand how prevalent isolationism was in the US and thought FDR was such great buttbudies with Britain that their new invasions would be the final straw in terms of war, so they decided to also take the Philippines, a U.S. Colony, and then try to destroy the U.S. pacific fleet with a sneak attack, eradicating Western naval presence in Asia. By the time the U.S. was able to rebuild their fleet and start pushing west from Hawaii, the Japs hoped they would have consolidated control so heavily that it would have been impossible to dislodge them.

Obviously the total defeat of the Japanese armed forces in the Pacific theater by America mattered. If Japan won every battle in the Pacific they wouldn't be in a position where they had to decide whether to unconditionally surrender. This isn't part of the conversation at all.

The issue that's being disputed is whether the atomic bombs were decisive in forcing the surrender. Since Japan had already shown that they didn't particularly mind the destruction of their cities (if they did they would have surrendered when it was obvious they couldn't do anything to protect them against regular bombing raids), there has to be some other variable that weighed on their minds.
