In the movie, its a martian thing. Did you not notice? All the martians in the flasbacks had big eyes and dead martians inside the destroyed ship had big eye caveties in their skulls. If you notice, what pays the most is crime, including sanctioned crime, while honest workers barely get by and have to overwork and use implants to get anything at all.

Just got back from second viewing. I felt so happy the whole time and had a big smile on my face. Nothing i have seen in cinema has been able to do that for me.
It's not as grimdark as the manga, but there's a fine line here between making a craptastic world, and making a laughably craptastic world. I think this theme of humans making the best of their situation and having decent social interaction helps explain why this society didn't devolve into Bartertown in 6 months.
Don't get me wrong, Mad Max is great, but it feels like a caricature. Alita feels more real.
As for the eyes, I think I was helped by seeing those when Alita opens them in a close-up. It doesn't look as weird as it would if we saw her face next to a normal human's face in the first shot. Also I didn't see the first trailer. I think it's interesting that their solution to making her look less uncanny was to make her eyes even bigger.
Kingsman was plenty bloody and violent, so that wasn't a problem. Cameron and Rodriguez wanted an edgy PG-13 movie, and so they made one.
Reminder that even if it fails financially, even Blade Runner got its sequel eventually.

But the place looks liveable and even nice. There's a disconnection there, and it would work way better simply by making Earth really look like a cold ugly nightmare.

By being more corny the tone of cartoony farce would have been complete. I loved the dog, it showed up when it was very convenient (too convenient) more like in a play than a movie, or, you know, a cartoon. I really loved that. With the eyes of the girl I felt the movie was embracing the absurdity, with the awesome robots that were trying to kill her during Motor Ball I felt that way also, and with the convenient dog, but then they didn't commit. Why give the girl big cartoony and fake-looking eyes and then embrace the cartoony, insane, silly nature of the premise only some times?
All the elements were there for a much better film.
But, again, I'm glad it exists and I'm very glad people are liking it.

It's an allegory for immigrants going from 3rd world countries to the West. Not all of them come from dirt poor countries where there sin't tap water. They just want a better life and that has always been like that. Jiru is a dumpster and Zalem is all clean and skyscrapers. Of course everyone wants to go up. The message of the movie was they were actually happy and didn't need to go to the wealthy city.
Because Rosa Salazar makes up for half if not more of the magic that is motion picture Alita. If she something happened to her, they'd have to get someone who could play Rosa playing Alita.

And so, his motivation is reduced to something we can understand. You are being chased, you escape.
But the lack of plan doesn't go at all with the motivation.

In the manga and anime, doctor Ido is more of a younger, bigger, sturdier character.
The one thing I did find a little odd is Ido in the movie walking around with the huge weapon thing, looking like he can barely lift it - let alone swing it.
Obviously he acted superb in his part, so is it that they just couldn't find an equally quality actor who could play that role as well but who fits the manga/anime better?

It's just much better focus. Ido finding the Berserker on a ship was just a handwave about how he got it. They turned it into an important character moment that also further tied into information taken form LO.

A little update on the box office. At this point, Alita will absolutely, 100%, pass 400 million by next Thursday minimum. China will add another 40 million to it's current 280 million WW total by Monday, foreign will definitely add another 50 million by the end of it's run, then add anything extra and domestic, the film will end at 430 million or above that.
