I never liked his character. It feels out of place. Like the story world is too small to include mafia guys. Do you get what I mean?

Nino, played by Perlman, and his partner Bernie, played by Albert Brooks, were Jewish mobsters running a syndicate in LA.

Mobsters from Philly, presumably Italian, had apparently moved out to the LA area to set up their own competing operation for loan sharking, or drug dealing, whatever.

Nino, wanted to hit the rival mafia operation, as a message, for operating in his territory. So he hired an ex-con, just out of jail, to do the job, and some redhead, to keep track of things, The other car was a cleanup crew meant to take out the robbers, to leave no loose ends behind.

The ex-con just also happened to be the ex of Goose’s female neighbor, and Goose wound up as the driver by chance.

Bernie was level headed, and didn’t want to rip off the Philly people, because the Philly people were presumably a much larger operation, but Bernie didn’t know about Neno’s plans, which is why he was angry when he found out.

The fact that Goose also worked for
Shannon, played by Cranston, and did stunts for movie productions Bernie and Nino funded was supposed to just be an unlucky coincidence.

After the job went bad, and cleanup crew got wrecked, and ex and redhead got killed, Bernie realized the mess Nino got both he and Nino in, and needed to clean up any and all loose ends, possibly delivering the bodies to the Philly Organization, or disappearing them, because otherwise the Philly organization would likely come after anyone they found out was involved.

Bernie didn’t want to kill Goose or Shannon, he just had to because he was a practicalist, and that was the only way to eliminate loose ends. Hence his comment aboit the people coming after Goose no matter how far he ran.

Goose killed Nino , and then Bernie for revenge, for the death of Shannon.
One of the rules of the mafia is respect.
Debts have to be paid back. By leaving the money with Bernie, there was less reason to go after him or seak retribution, because there was nothing to recover.
