watched Le Doulos last night, first Melville film I've ever seen
loved the compositions, camera movements, and how he masterfully used lights and shadows throughout the film (I'm new to noir/neo-noir, so it's still very impressive to me)
One scene that particularly struck out with me was the interrogation in the police office, which is like a 5min take of just the officers intimidating Silien, and it's still amazingly dynamic and interesting all along
Loved the first scene too
my main complaint is regarding the writing. I know Melville is often praised for his screenwriting, but I did not care for the exposition in the bar scene nor about the final shootout, with that Kern dude from prision

what else should I watch from Melville? I've been told Le Samourai and Le Cercle Rouge are his best

I still find it hilarious Wilson is fluent in English, part Irish, went to RADA, and they gave him the most stereotypically French role imaginable. All of his Hollywood roles were like that.
His American accent in Pas Sur La Bouche was more convincing than the garblings of over 90% of British actors in the past 20 years.
I'd like to see him in at least one more 'global' role. He'd be a great Liet Kynes or some other older guy in Dune. That or some historical kino.
