In retrospect it really was like another Star Wars. Nice and tight with very little bullshit. My only issue is that the producers dumbed it down so that humans were sources of energy instead of sources of computational power.

Also they got so lucky with that score. The cold french horns and the trumpets is all it takes to transport you in.

My head-canon is that humans are still used for computational power but Morpheus dumbs it down for Neo.

Matrix is the original capeshit and a verbatim rip-off of Daniel F. Galouye's 1964 book Simulacron-3. It substituted the book's serene contemplation with over-the-top action scenes, so that even most severe ADHD crippled children would grok it.

3/10 is all I can give the "Matrix" for trying.

Instead, consider watching Fassbender's "Welt am Draht" which is also based on the book except he doesn't try to hide the fact.

No longer burdened by having to explain what the Matrix is, the duo double down on the existential philosophy creating a near-impenetrable juxtaposition of dense metaphysical commentary alongside what are arguably the greatest CGI effects ever immortalized on film. Cinema has given us so few things as irresistible as the Merovingian's monologue on causality immediately followed by a truly magnificent car chase that does not even feature the main character. Unlike the original, nothing in this film, or it's sequel, is spoon-fed to you, so it's understandable why it lost some fans. Under-performing at the box office, and excoriated by the masses, The Matrix will probably forever hold the distinction of being the very last R-rated blockbuster franchise. Coming in at number sixty-four on the box office chart, The Matrix: Reloaded is the highest ranked R-rated film that isn't about Jesus Christ the savior or Jesus Christ the sniper. So, thanks a lot for that. No really, I much prefer watching Thor 3 and Iron Man 4 to what the Wachowski's could write with a blank check.

its hard to explain. I like to think it came at the perfect time. at this point everyone knew that computers and internet were the future. y2k convinced everyone how dependent to computers are and that eventually this could be possible.

the clothes, the music, the CGI , the slowmo, the flip phones was all revolutionary too. for some reason when I think of that time period 1998-2001 I think of the matrix. its a great time capsule for that era

Not really my guy. Maybe every once in a while a celebrity will wear full leather to an event, but that doesn't contradict what I said. Everyone in the 90s just slapped some punk kids in the background and some trenchcoats on their protags and said "here's the future", because at the time punk was big. Then it died, and leather burned with it (in the mainstream). Of course the LGBT leather scene (a miniculture of an already small subculture) stuck around, but from what I've read that's starting to go away as well.
