My favorite theory is that the Vulcan origin story is essentially half-remembered national myth-esque propaganda.

Think about it - there was a massive war thousands of years ago, this led to Surak's teachings, the Romulans rejected them, fucked off into space and somehow became a Quadrant-controlling power? While the Vulcans ended up with a handful of colonies during the same time period? And this was with the Romulans still being the society that nearly destroyed itself previously but somehow managed to get their shit together, fly a gazillion kilometers, settle worlds, still not kill each other again, and become a mega empire?

Sure you could argue the Romulans were especially expansionist but either they're just incredibly successful to go from a few dozen refugee ships to a galactic Superpower while being the illogical brutes that nearly doomed early Vulcan, or the story (that we've only heard the Vulcans tell) is bogus.

What really happened was that it was the VULCANS who fled. They were the religious extremists (as per canon), and fled for greener/safer pastures, much like the Mayflower Pilgrims. Surak was a radical preacher (think Muhammed), the megawarfare was somewhat overblown in the retelling, and the Surakites were either forced out or fled. Vulcan was presumably a holy planet for them and that's why they settled there.

They were moderately successful, but their whole ideology is that they're by definition right since they're logical and pragmatic. To have the majority of their people reject the philosophy would go against that. So they come up with some half-baked BS about how they nearly destroyed each other in the past before Logic(tm), and Surak showed them all the light but some poor savages refused and fucked off to the Beta Quadrant and (mumble) created a massive galactic empire that outclasses the Vulcans handily (mumble).

Otherwise they'd have to accept they were the weird ones, the outcasts, the losers.

In essence, Vulcans are the original WE WUZers of Star Trek, by falsely arguing direct descent from early Vulcan-Romulan society.

This revelation right here? That's the plot for STD season 3. Now you might object and protest and throw a temper tantrum because we shouldn't get to see any Romulans before Balance of Terror, but... that's the plot for STD season 3.

i like to think that the romulans became a major power because although they didn't calm their barbaric side with logic, their experience with the vilcans and traveling and colonizing a different planet allowed them to focus those inhibitions on other people instead of each other, leading to them spreading across the region and establishing themselves as a major power, this of course led to feelings of superiority which allowed them to further cement a more united culture that didn't implode on its self and instead turned outwars towards other species

One of the things I liked about Deep Space 9 was that instead of having the crew drop in, denounce the backward locals and fly off, morally repellent characters like Wynn and Dukat kept coming back.
Not only that, Wynn's ironclad ambition and Dukat's ego and Bajora Fever were indispensible to peaceful reconstruction.
When Sisko goes off and Dukat goes bugfuck it closes the door on that part of DS9 forever. Which is too bad, because the war arc already felt rushed and anvillicious.
A complex character who comes to terms with the massive harm they've perpetrated, and makes amends however imperfectly, is a much better example of how Trek fights "evil" than ZOMG HE'S LITERALLY SATANIC SCHIZO SPACE HITLER.

i would say the best way to describe it is that it feels like a legitimate startrek episode unlike the others but unfortunately not a particularly good or interesting one

It's pretty decent, but much too late to save the movies. At least skim a wiki summary of '09 before watching Beyond.
