I thought the same the first time I saw it, but upon rewatching it I became a lot more invested in Max's character. It might be the context of knowing there are sequels, but the movie became more engaging when I realized the entire thing is about Max and his collapse due to the death of his family, and all the secondary characters like the police chief and the farmer are sort of irrelevant props used to move the story along

I was fairly certain it was a requirement for any accredited tertiary education in aus along with WHS.
