It took decades, but pure 4:4:4 sub-sampling of colors is possible with 1080p video when you downscale 4:2:0 or 4:2:2 UHD video. See this youtube video about the subject. youtube.com/watch?v=kIf9h2Gkm_U
Additionally, a great many so-called 4k or UHD releases of movies and television shows are derived from a 2k digital intermediate file, or were shot on 2k digital cameras to begin with. This means they are simply upscaled to 4k for distribution, with the benefit of higher bit rate, 10-bit color, and HDR.
When it comes to 10-bit color and HDR: they are mostly memes. Especially 10-bit color. Have you ever been bothered by excessive banding your media? No? Don't even know what I'm talking about? That's why it's a meme. Dithering works extremely well in 8-bit color to reduce banding artifacts, and with the increase in CPU and GPU power in recent times most people now have access to hardware which can properly display a 1080p image which does not have noticeable banding artifacts. The 4:4:4 color and high bitrate also help with this tremendously.
HDR is nice to have, but the truth is it is just sort of the easy way around to having a contrast-y image. A properly configured SDR (aka your normal non-HDR display) device can also exhibit this great contrast if you just turn down the lights a bit and let your eyes adjust. Also keep in mind that not everything needs to have a super high dynamic range. Some scenes call for a foggy, hazy, or washed out look. Pushing for everything to have that noob desire for "pop" is foolishnesss.
High quality 1080p televisions are cheap right now because of the push for 4k and HDR. If you are thinking of upgrading your TV or monitor I suggest doing so laterally. Buy a used 1080p device with a much better contrast ratio, higher refresh, lower response time, or lower input lag. Or spend your money on something else.
you should always buy used, even if it is technology that just came out

Most likely won't matter unless you sit very close to your display or it's incredibly huge.

Thing is, 4K TVs are dirt fucking cheap right now. Like $500-600 bucks can bag you a 60 inch LG or Samsung TV. A 1080p TV that size in 2012 still cost over $1000.

The samsung and LG tv's in that price range are pretty lousy. Get a TCL 6 series.

Linus was surprised how decent one of those sets was. Anyway, the point is that buying a huge TV is nowhere near as expensive as it was just 6 years ago.
