I just saw it for the first time this morning, and I have to say I agree with the posters saying they tried to fit too much of the manga into two hours. They should have cut the last thirty minutes of the plot and let the rest of the story expand to fill the 2 hours. I also would have liked to see more practical special effects, and I thought Keean Johnson's acting didn't live up to his central place in the story.

As far as I noticed, the only practical effects were the hell hounds when you first see them. Everything else was either CGI or practical enhanced with CGI, like the electric skates.

You ever hear the director talk about how expensive every shot of Alita is and realize how much she dominates the film, how much thought and calculation went into making sure every moment that she's on screen is utilized to the fullest and not a single second of her is wasted?
This might be the most loved cinematic character of all time, from a combined fan and creator perspective. Every moment of her existence is filled with sincere love.
I assumed her whole squad was total-replacement cyborgs. They're not limited to looking like their original bodies - although I guess it helps with identification.

Alita herself was beautifully rendered, but I felt that a lot of the other cyborgs needed to be given a little more texture and weight. There were some sequences, particularly on the Motorball track, were I didn't /feel/ the impacts anymore than I would in a cartoon.
Nah I'm not into collectible figurines. Maybe I'll get the art book someday, and the novelization/prequel. I'm more interested on getting my hands on the manga at the moment, and the DVD once it's released.

Hmm, unfortunately, Alita: Battle Angel is tracking exactly alongside Blade Runner 2049 at the US box office. So that means it will end up with 90 to 92 million at the end of it's US run. Luckily, the countries overseas are giving it much, much more love and attention, so it will be fine there, just disappointing in the states.

I blame the marketing desu. The trailers didn't sell me the movie, and I heard little else about it. Word of mouth seems like the way most people found out about the movie, which is a shame.
Going to the cinema alone is actually the best way to do it, I've found. Even better if you can go at a time when there won't be anyone else in the theatre. There were literally only two other people in the theatre when I saw Alita, sitting right at the back. Couldn't have been better (from my perspective, although obviously I with the movie was doing better at the box office). No faggots on their phones, no idiots whispering stupid comments to each other, no people getting up to go to the bathroom every five minutes. Going to the cinema alone is the patrician way to do it.
It's so interesting, Alita will break box office records, but not in the way you think. With the way it's tracking in China, it could be the first production ever to make less than 100 million in the US, but make 200 million in China. Also, China's opening weekend was the biggest opening ever for Fox, and it's tracking better than Bumblebee and Aquaman, which went on to gross over 150 million in China. It's doing fantastic everywhere, but the US. What the hell.

I'm back. Why the fuck the critics don't give this movie the praises it legitimately deserves ? It may have flaws and it's ok to point them, but not noticing how it is fresh and new is beyond hypocrisy.
Visually it's above everything made to this day by far, the level of details is just absurd, it's perfectly animated and they made a good use of that: there's no "15 plans/second" bullshit, it's fluid and pleasant to watch. You CANNOT write a paper about this and just say "it was OK", just buy a new pair of glasses please.
And yeah ok I got you guys, Alita is shockingly lovable, it's hard to describe, she's fucking brutal in everything she does, be it enjoying life and falling in love or atomizing everything in her path. With how popular Kizuna Ai is over in Japan, it's surprising how shit the draw at the box office is for this movie despite her shilling for it.
When they are first introduced, they look and move like animatronics. They're movement is a bit "jittery" like there was pneumatic tubes controlling their movement. Every scene after that they were CGI.

Movie wasn't crammed at all, I thought it was a slightly fast tempo meant to compliment the action, besides it's just an expanded OVA anyways. If you thought this movie was crammed, wait until the sequel when there's no OVA and Cameron decides to get past the Zapan arc.

There's a massive tone difference for sure, but I think they needed to make the scrapyard bright and a lot happier for it to line up with Alita's innocence and naivety as she's discovering the world for the first time.
It wouldn't have been harmonious had it been a rusty hellpit. I mean I don't think the chocolate eating scene which was like pure innocence could have even existed in the movie had the city been dark and full of starving druggies on the street.

Alright, I'll quit talking about the box office until more updates tomorrow, but as long as it hits over 410 million worldwide and then some, a sequel will more than likely get made, considering Fox themselves said the break even point was just 350 million. Pacific Rim got a sequel with 411 million at the box office against a 190 million budget.

Checked and yeah I think Iron City is shown the way it is because you're meant to be seeing it through her eyes. In fact I think one of the commentaries said as much? They wanted the audience to be introduced through the stories world and lore through Alita.

Bruh, it's literally the middle of a school semester in the states. Of course there's going to be a huge drop off during the weekdays. The reason for the huge weekend numbers was also due to most parents having the same idea and taking the family on the weekend.

I liked how people just got killed left and right. That's what made the Alita/Motorball sequence so great.
Yeah they were able to do quite a lot for PG13, it was able to maintain the innocence but have a good amount of gore/action.

Exactly. This film is the actual true meaning of the phrase of "subverting your expectations". At many moments you're expecting so many common tropes of moralizing or pulling punches because the main character is supposed to be "better than that", yet Alita does none of that shit.
I mean, she lets Zapan off with a warning the first time around after a brutal humiliation, but when he presented an actual tangible threat, she just fucking went right through him and took his face. She's a fucking tank.

It is a strange movie. Usually when I watch movie or tv show I ask myself "will I like to spend a day in this movie universe" It is very rare to like a movie and the answer to the question to be no. I would not like to spend a day in the dumpster that was the city of the movie. It is dirty, dusty, and full of cyborg the size of a truck that can stomp you. But I will like to spend a day in it if I can hang out with Alita.
