What's the appeal of this series

You're supposed to watch them when you're trying to fall asleep

A roastie could never understand, its a mans romance.

It doesn't really pick up until Roddenberry dies. Once he's out of the picture, season 3->Season 4, it's pretty great. You still have the occasional stinker, but for every bad episode you get 4 fantastic episodes.

DS9 is so much more enjoyable desu

I can watch that series over and over again continuously for eternity. So comfy.

It dives deep into what it means to be human.
It presents moral quandaries that actually make you think
It sparks the imagination and gives hope for a future where "humanity has grown out of its adolescence "
It has exploration of the wonders of the galaxy
Cool space battles
Fucking awesome political intrigue
Has some hot pootang too

season 1 and 2 are trash, rest is good

Because it's a ship you spend potentially decades living on; it's designed for maximum comfy so you don't get space-ptsd.

Season 3 is when it's 2/4.
Ds9 is 2/4 starting with season 2.
Babylon 5 is 3/4 starting with season 2, but the special effects are extremely dated.

I watched it all a couple years ago with no previous trek experience.
People told me to watch it all and in retrospect I'm glad I did, but the majority of episodes are shit in seasons 1 and 2. With some good episodes here and there.
Starting with season 3 the pattern starts to reverse.

this is totally one of the shows you need two monitors for. If I was working or playing a game I could easily watch it but alone? I would die of boredom.

It's comfy, I think that's why it's nice to watch, it's not some dark gritty story generally. It's a perfect background show.

Mainly watch it for the philosophical quandaries. Definitely gets better after the first couple of seasons but if it's not you thing then whatever.
