Probably because the approach of the movie is to (correctly) depict the scene as a bunch of edgy teenagers who get in over their heads rather than as a bunch of prophets of satan. The mean age of the scene was like 18 years old; imagine how embarrassing it would be to have all of your juvenile ideations stripped of all the lore that black metal fans attribute to the "lords of chaos".

Of course they were a bunch of edgy teens - but that doesn't change that the movie takes 3 real life murders and hams them up so the movie can uphold it's college drama narrative.
With all the cringy teen drama euronymus voiceovers i was really surprised the didn't went full retard by opening with his corpse and a record scratch.

I know Varg isn't playing a character, but he's such a fucking larger-than-life guy I have a hard time believing it sometimes.

I actually really liked the movie, I know there is a lot inaccuracies and lies in the film but I enjoyed the whole thing. Also great portrayal of Varg. Wished Dead could have been in the movie longer, also I really liked Rory Culkin as Euronymous he played him well.

Just listen to the 2nd wave of black metal (i.e. Burzum, Darkthrone, etc), and Bathory. Ulver is technically subsumed by the category "2nd wave black metal" but this album is so good it deserves its own (You).
After that just dick around on last.fm with recommendations. A few of my favorites are Deathspell Omega (start with Si Monumentum Requires Circumspice), Blut Aus Nord (the Work which Transforms God), the Axis of Perdition (the Ichneumon Method), Ildjarn (Ildjarn is Dead), ColdWorld (Melancholie^2), Branikald (Frost Vision), and Fanisk (Noontide).
