I watched this for the first time last night. I hoped I would like it but it really didn't leave any impact on me. Maybe the directing and style and subject matter was ahead of its time but the "characters" and plot were just not that good.

You should get on that, even if you disregard it’s connection to the original it’s a genuinely well made movie, user.

That’s honestly perfectly fair, the characters are the least compelling aspect of the movie anyway, except for Roy. Not saying there’s anything wrong with not getting much out of it the first time through, but I’ve heard people pick up more upon subsequent viewings. Give it another try when you’ve got time.
