They should've ended the series with the first movie. It would have been a decent send off and at least they would've gone out on a higher note than ending it on season 35-40. They still won't take the hint and end it on the second movie. Maybe season 50 will be the final one.

That's just because Mike Judge is legitimately a comic genius. Whereas Matt Groening is in all sincerity a fucking hack whose work was elevated because of the hardwork of others. The reason The Simpsons was any good was only because of James L Brooks and Sam Simon.

It will contain very few self-referential gags because they don't want to alienate first-time viewers. They had the same policy with the first movie; if a test audience was baffled by a self-referential joke which was deemed too subtle or obscure, they simply edited it out. The only kind of running gags that were allowed were things like "homer dumb hehe, Bart bad hehe, Lisa smart hehe" because these are things that even people who are unfamiliar with the Simpsons will have a basic idea of.
It was a soulless money-spinner and there's no reason to believe the sequel will be any different.
