Astonishingly, most people thought it was a movie about time travel. Check Rotten Tomatoes, even the critics didn't understand it. Which is fucking weird because it's not hard to understand.

There is only 1 real timeline, the present. The past timeline is Izzy's story she's writing to help her husband understand death the way she has come to and help him deal with it. The future timeline is simply a visual metaphor for Thomas' soul/mind.

Aronofsky started working on the movie after interviewing family and patients in the terminal ward of the hospital during filming of his previous movie. He was surprised to find out that the families had a harder time with mortality than the patients, who had come to accept their deaths. The patients voice some frustration at their inability to help their families understand why they're okay with dying. That's what The Fountain is about.

It feels very intimate, almost Malickian, but with conventional cinematography.
Definitely the best Aronofsky movie.

He can't "finish it/the book" because it means accepting that his wife is going to die and he can't save her. Like the conquistador, he's been so focused on his own quest that he neglected his wife during her last days.

This one becomes incredibly obvious upon rewatching. He's literally isolated himself in a sphere of loneliness dominated by the dying tree. They even beat you over the head with the tree being a symbol of his wife when he breathes on it and they cut to him doing the same to his wife's skin. When he loses his ring he begins torturing himself mentally over the loss. And as Thomas gets closing to finishing the book his wife wrote, his sphere gets closer and closer to enlightenment, until finally, at the end, he gets it. He understands what his wife was trying to tell him. That even if we die, "we" will still be a part of the universe, and that the rest doesn't matter.

and terrible movies 3.5 or 4 stars and above with the hivemind ratings

Some genuinely really good movies have the most upvoated review being 1 or 2 stars and shit overrated movies always have 4 4.5 or 5 star reviews as the highest
