A lot of things that happen in the manga happen because no one's really in control of anything. It's more of a "character vs the system" story than a "character A vs character B" scenario.

As a 47 year old user who went to film school and read Gunnnm in the late '90s I agree. I hated this movie. There's no point in trying to dissect what Alita: Battle Angel got right or wrong in terms of script or pacing or character development or whatever else film snobs like to blather on about. Its all horrible. Alita is just a boring, cringefest of what I hoped would at least be a worthwhile trilogy, if not more. They couldn't have animated Alita any worse. (Those eyes, wtf?) Terrible movie. Complete waste of two hours. Don't bother seeing it the theater. Watch the cam rip on a laptop if you want to how bad the movie is. I am glad its flopping. There doesn't need to be a sequel.

It's not "retconned" if it was planned from the beginning. Cameron actually wrote out a freaking book on how he wanted the trilogy to play out, that Rodriguez used to make this movie (and why Cameron was okay with giving the reigns over to another director). The movie never actually explicitly shows Nova as being the head villain either, it's only really implied, no doubt to set up a Shamalamadingdong twist in the sequel where it turns out he's not.

I suppose. From the viewer's perspective it can definitely seem this way if it isn't done correctly, though. I'm not being critical, even in the manga Nova's character is poorly-written. I don't blame the movie at all for portraying him as more of a straightforward villain/antagonist than the "le wacky chaos science man" he was in the source material.
Hell, if they wanna go super next-level they could even get ahead of Last Order's ridiculous plot and make this movie's Nova an evil clone.

A lot of the love here ironically comes from Cameron's announcement back in 2003 of his intentions to adapt this work in the first place. No one can figure out what URM tech is or how to use it, it's basically junk, and what stuff people could figure out was very quickly salvaged. I actually went in really excited and hopeful but my hope started to diminish when I saw Alita go out on the street with Ido guiding her as he spewed expository dialogue. My hope died completely when she tried to fight the robot in the street and Hugo had to "save" her.

Yugo's death in the OVA left a genuine impression on me and in the movie it just happens. It doesn't feel meaningful or earned. Also doesn't help that he went from being an idealistic 16 year old to a grown man, he just came off as a dumbass.

Iron City wasn't nearly as scummy or hell-ish in the movie. It felt like a poor city, but not one that's dangerous or overly bleak. In the OVA you can feel Chiren and Yugo's desperation to get to Zalem, it's reflected in everything they say and do. In the movie they still want to go to Zalem but it's not treated as seriously, Chiren is more sympathetic and her relationship with Vektor is more mutual instead of her kind of like whoring herself out for him. And Yugo climbing up the delivery chute is a last chance effort for survival instead of a desperate clinging last chance effort to get to Zalem.

The result is something that is clearly honoring the source without being identical or derivative. It even came up with some new ideas based upon the core aspects of the source material. It was fresh, interesting, and is just about timeless, because none of the operative concepts can be dated, due to how they're all still entirely theoretical concerns.
Gunnm could've been treated the same way. But clearly wasn't. It was treated as a repository of scenes to be copied into CGI, the context of those scenes ignored for something "tighter." The final result is a mess of a movie that cheapens and weakens the source.

Actually it made sense for the medium and the audience it as to attract for a bid budget movie. The movie is not perfect but is the best attempt so far with a lot of dedication, heart and love put into it. The main character is very endearing. More move like this needs to be made.
