Saw it yesterday. Didn't think it was that good. The CGI is gonna be extremely dated in a few years, the plot was kinda erratic and I didn't really buy the romance. Alita wasn't that great of a protagonist either, most of the time she acted like some sort of very violent Disney Princess. I did like her relationship the doctor. They really felt like father and daughter. Waltz is always great.

Those are not actually plot holes. Its pretty clear that the wife had major issues after her daughters death. So instead of plotholes, i would simply say its not explained, becasue there could totally be a reasonable line of action. Nova spent the movie after Alita, and he pretty much concluded that it is easier to threaten those she loves than actually killing her
A better question is: Why would Alita ask help from Bounty Hunters to fight a guy who has no bounty on him and that she easily curb-stomped into fleeing the last time?

The most jarring thing in the whole movie for me was when YUGO's introductory line was "outstanding," and then shortly after he followed with an "unacceptable." Outstanding and unacceptable as complete sentences and statements of fact is to me immediately reminiscent of my basic training, so it was very strange for me to hear this guy talk like he was about to start yelling at me for how my boots were laced.
I don't know yet. Some guy told me about VIP seats or something, it's probably one of those large couches with tables and stuff. No IMAX or 4D but it's okay. Still pretty exciting!

I actually don't think that Nova is going to end up the overlord of Zalem. I think he's obviously important but we don't necessarily know that he kicked Ito and family down to Iron City. Come Fallen Angel I think we're gonna properly find out where Nova sits in the hierarchy.

There's just no way a BD can compare. That's less than 50GB compared to the TBs that a standard projection needs, and the even more TBs for IMAX or other large format. And then sound and 3D. It's just not something you can recreate at home without spending a fortune.

Beyond Good & Evil, though you're not a robot but an alien, still it's got a cute girl protagonist who is actually competent in a fight and a world where everything is really run down.

the issue is in order for the plot to go foward as the manga's did, in the first few minutes of the next movie they'd need to kick nova out, sentence alita to execution somehow, save her from execution, introduce a whole new cabal of salemites, and then have alita ditch iron city, all in about 5 minutes. and the sequel hook was motorball.
So most likely they're going to skip everything after three, and have alita go directly to salem and do a bastardization of last order.

Panzerkunst was pretty awkward in English, and I'm glad they only said it once or twice. That kind of thing puts them in a tough situation because パンツァークンスト sounds cool in Japanese but silly in English because panzer is already a [loan]word in English and it means "tank", and kunst is clearly just made up.
Another thing that didn't translate well from the manga/OVA was that getup Ido goes out in to do the bounty hunting, he just looks so incredibly out of place with that hat and coat. In anime we don't bat an eye because we're used to characters wearing implausible, outlandish clothing all the time (Vash the Stampede comes to mind) but it looks very strange in live action. I think they left that kind of stuff as-is because Cameron is a weeb and the alternative would draw unnecessary amounts of hate from weebs.

It apparently needs between 350 to 500 million to break even (closer to 350 most likely) and since it's Cameron's passion project, he still might be pushing for a sequel, even if it loses a bit of money. In the manga/OVA he actually had a reason to. He didn't want to go to Zalem just to go to Zalem.
The OVA covered the first two volumes of the manga in 60 minutes. The movie basically copies the OVA and throws LITERALLY EVERYTHING at the screen for another hour. The result is a rushed clusterfuck where, by the end, nothing is resolved and nothing really changes, but it still ends with a sequel hook.

Plus, before Avatar was developed, it was 50/50 between it and Alita, but the test scenes for Avatar were better in his opinion than Alita. The only reason Rodriguez was anywhere near this film in the first place was because he is busy slaving away in the smurf mines per his contract, and he wanted Alita to see the light of day before he died. But he bought the rights to any sort of adaptation for Alita almost immediately after being introduced to the OVA and manga by del Toro back in the 90s.

The movie is good though. For once, it's straight up a solid adaptation of the source material, with a very alluring world, attractive characters, and intense non-stop action. And thematically, it's very tasteful, like the manga was. Cyborgs, bounty hunters, racing-killing tournaments, underdog warriors, teen love, etc. What's not to like?
That and the way Hugo gets a bounty on his head were the dumb parts of the movie
