They totally are in the year they are in but ten years down the line, let alone a hundred, sole best picture winner will be a movie of a specific year that majority of people will watch. Aside from outlier GOATs and i guess imdb top 100 oscars are best predictors of historical relevancy, same for best of the year of any other media. Basically it's a battle of memes and considering that people treat their tastes as continuation of themselves of course they want something that is a part of them to stay historically relevant.
