The goofy shit doesn't start until Chapter 3. It got all the hype from people who were still playing Chapter 2, which was fairly well grounded. By the time the story gets to Sandy Knee, the tone of the game completely shifts to becoming -very- GTA-like.

They should have stayed out of the city, told a much tighter and cohesive story that was 75% shorter, but then allowed you to replay the story from the perspective of multiple different factions within the game, like the lawmen, pinkertons, monied interests, and various gangs. They would have had to not quite be so precious about muh Dutch's Gang and muh Arthur, though, and since they fancy themselves "writers" now, i doubt that was ever a possibility.

Better written acted and directed than most "cinema"

This is true, from the end of Chapter 3 onwards almost every mission is a big shootout or robbery or heist gone bad, and then kind of slows down again in Chapter 6 to focus on Arthur's sickness and "redemption"

It's a slow burn but it definitely devolves into a GTA-type story as it goes along.

The only time it feels like gta is any mission involving micah or bill billiamson

Also yeah the one issue I had with the game was how many guys came after you during the missions. Like no matter what the situation was there was always 100s of guys coming after you out of nowhere. Wish they toned down on that and put in a realistic amount of men you’d be going up against and not a whole army every mission

I think that they could have handled the “left me to die” thing a little better, go off of Bill’s comment “Dutch wanted you dead, we all did!” From RDR1. The game hinted Dutch wanted Arthur dead but not so much John. Not that it wasn’t addressed, just that Bill and Javier (and somewhat Dutch) could have been more hostile
