I just got back from seeing it, it was a lot better than I expected, and Cameron kept faith to the source material more than I expected. I 100% was expecting him to concoct some BS happy ending like typical hollywood trash and the fact he didn't stoop to that alone made me walk out of the theater much more impressed than I thought I would be.
It's 3.2m and it's 14% higher than Aquachad's opening just 3 weeks earlier.

In the OVA and manga, the scrapyard is an inescapable hell. Thus it is perfectly understandable that he'd rather die than be granted the "gift" of cybernetic immortality so he can stay in literally hell forever as 10% of the man he used to be.
In the movie, there is no real sound justification for his salem obsession. As they gutted his backstory and made the scrapy- wait, excuse me, iron city, no worse than any city. A generally pleasant place that people could come and go from whenever they pleased.

Everyone associated is all in really, and they're smart and looking at how well the audience has received it. They need to market it much better next time around. We'll probably get a sequel in 2022, I think Avatar 2 is dropping end of next year.

Yeah I definitely didn't like the portrayal of the city, I felt the first act of the movie was by far its weakest. It wasn't until the second act I started getting really invested. In this case though I don't think despair was lacking, they had the right elements, but they made people too content, too at home.
They definitely softened the despair for movie audiences, I won't deny it, but I think once the movie picks up momentum it starts to shine. It's not a perfect adaptation but it's far better than I was expecting.

They chose to show us a bunch of scenes that make us think "see it's not so bad, it's like any other town" which spoils the atmosphere of despair that makes us understand and sympathize with Hugo's motivations to prey on people. They adequately foreshadow him being a scrapper so I won't say this is bad writing per se, but it's a bit of tone conflict.

Watching it for the third time today I've come to the realisation that there is simply so much information density in the script; nearly every line has a purpose. So much so that even on the third viewing I was picking up things I missed the first time.
There are unironically a deceptively large number of layers to this film, if you missed it first time watch it again.
It's pretty much the only city left in the world and in the manga the city was where the US was so of course there'd be black people.

in the manga the shipments of body parts were to keep salem's baby factory gene pool sufficiently deep and varied. Nova isn't even directly mentioned (only alluded to) for about four volumes and isn't in the OVA at all. So they literally just made up that shit about chiren being dismembered for nova's experiments.

I'm a 47 year old user who went to film school and read Gunnnm in the late '90s. I hated this movie. There's no point in trying to dissect what Alita: Battle Angel got right or wrong in terms of script or pacing or character development or whatever else film snobs like to blather on about. Its all horrible. Alita is just a boring, cringefest of what I hoped would at least be a worthwhile trilogy, if not more. They couldn't have animated Alita any worse. Those eyes, wtf? Terrible movie. Complete waste of two hours. Don't bother seeing it the theater. Watch the cam rip on a laptop if you want to how bad the movie is. I am glad its flopping. There doesn't need to be a sequel.

Right before he gets bladed he agrees to turning back. Thats why its tragic. Hugo overlooked Alita until it was too late. Its similar to when he's hiding out and he looks at her eyes and thinks how he's ignored her all this time in favor of Zalem. He's still a kid and can still have a tinge of hopefulness even if it comes too late.
