I'm pretty sure first-class passengers in general were prioritized, but iirc quite a few of the first-class men gave up their spots so they could provide more room for the women and children.

Many of the first lifeboats that were released were not even close to being full.

It's important to remember, many did not initially realize the imminent peril of the situation.

I remember reading on Wikipedia how one of the crew survivors (I guess he was an officer) happened to forget the key for the binoculars that could've spotted the iceberg at home but he conveniently found the key to the revolver which he then used to make sure the men (who may have been bankers or Irish coincidentally) to not grab the lifeboats (that were being wasted by falling into the sea unmanned) and when most people were either dead or in the water then took it upon himself to get in a boat himself. Basically one officer was an idiot who got a whole bunch of people killed for no good reason. Apparently the whole crew was grossly unprepared for the emergency, having only conducted a single lifeboat drill with 10 men.
