I went last night with low expectations, and was pleasantly surprised. Is China going to save the sequel? I hear the gov takes like 75% of earnings so it has to be an insanely huge hit there to do so.

i feel the same, man i haven't been this exited from a movie in a looong ass time.

Warcraft had a budget of $160M and made $430M (it needed 450 to break even).
By this point Alita made in the US more than Warcraft did in its 2nd week.
When all is said and done I think Alita will make between $500-700M which is good enough that Fox(By then Disney) will greenlight sequels.

The dialogue is embarrassing, the plot is unfocussed and all a setup for a sequel that it doesn't deserve, the acting is bad

I seriously doubt that, it debuted in China this weekend at $60 million and that is the market which realistically could save it, but foreign movies seldom have good legs in China, and with only 25% of the box office take going back to foreign companies, it really needs to.

Meanwhile domestically it continues to do quite poorly, $60 million for such a hyped movie with a $170 million production budget is not much to write home about.

At least it's already done better than the worst sci-fi turkey in recent memory, which was Luc Besson's 'Valerian'. It had the same budget and only managed $40 million domestic and $180 million foreign.

The plot is hardly unfocused. It follows a set arc of growth for Alita with honestly very obvious symbolism - her being "born" into Ido's daughter's body, exploring the world, falling in love, etc... This culminates in the destruction of her naivety and innocence at Grewishka's hands (which follows the bar scene where she realizes this jaded city is too cynical to help her). She is then reborn as an adult (with literal adult proportions as noted by the nurse) in her berserker body. Her love for Hugo matures, and she goes off fully out from Ido's wing into her own at the motor ball competition to help Hugo get to Zalem. Then Hugo dies and the end follows as we realize Nova was the lynchpin.

The big issue here is the breakneck pacing of the movie - there is hardly time for you to catch up and breath, especially with all the visuals and action going on around you. Another watch will clarify this for you.

As for the dialogue, it is cheesy at points yes. But that is because it's prime Cameron dialogue that is acted as sincerely and earnestly as possible. Unlike many modern blockbusters (capeshit being prime example here) which rely on self-awareness and irony to carry itself, Alita genuinely wants you to believe in her world. Plus it is anime as fuck.
