The ultimate pleb AND American filter. Filters both of them for the same reasons, short attention spans and a lack of aesthetic sensibility.

I'm an American and this is one of my favorite 90s movies
rosemary's baby is way better
Now I got to watch it!
europe travel kino
This was a pretty solid movie, I don't think it really says anything about you if you enjoyed it. Glad I saw Yea Forums talking about it a while back. Something really comfy about it.
The succubus in Ninth Gate IS Rosemary's Baby.
>make sense now?
My dad loves this movie and has been trying to get me to watch it with him for the longest time. I can't wait to tell him that this place thinks he has good taste in films.
Nah, it's not as comfy and atmospheric.
>he thinks his dad isn't the person who made the thread
>mere succubus
did you even watch the film?
I like it. It's a dark adventure.
Just wanted to throw out this theory here:
The brothers in spain knew about the secret and power of the Ninth Gate and replaced one of the pages with a masterwork forgery they created, thus damning whoever tried to complete the ritual to burn to death and destroy the pages in the process.
They are the first to point Corso to the signature LCF and he finds the hidden real page left where their bookshop used to be.
But she's the Whore of Babylon?
If i wanted to watch someone read a book for two hours with some sex in the end I'll go to a college library
fugg
This is already obvious user. The angel with the bow and arrow depicted on one of the nine pictures has the same likeliness as the Ceniza brothers. Those poles that almost crushed Corso? Those were symbolical arrows. You need only question why nobody knew the brothers at the end of the film. They were never even there. They were the 'masterful forgers' discussed, whether they were just humans dedicated to Hell, or something other, is unknown.
Americans also won't watch this movie because they hate Polanski.
You're an American, aren't you?
This movie is unironically based because Polanski
I'm actually a brit pretending to be american.
Best part of the movie for me, famalams.
Simultaneously hilarious and disturbing
How much of the supernatural shit was even real in this movie?
All of it.
My question is, was the girl the WHore of Babylon or the Devil himself?
In the novel she's a fallen angel but in the movie it's more ambiguous, she could be the Devil, or just some demon, or neither
In the novel, she's a fallen angel, who fought for the basic freedom to be. In the film, she's whore of Babylon, riding the dragon/seven-headed beast that Corso becomes in his quest for knowledge.
Polanski stated she was a face of the Devil. Her symbolism runs directly with the Whore of Babylon, who WAS a face of evil, temptation and selling yourself out, to the Devil even. She even baptized Corso in blood.
>dragon/seven-headed
which is the Devil?
And then he married her. What did polanksi mean by this?
The Devil gives good head?
Americans are the fatter cousins of British people, so good enough.
Ninth Gate, Eyes Wide Shut, Rose Marys Baby.
Occult noir is GOAT
And you forgot he had her starring in quite a few of his films, having sex with other people.
True. But the absurdity of everyday people being cultists, impregnating you, and happily chanting hail satan is good too.
Brothers and the girl appear in the book, and so are supernatural gate keepers.
Angel Heart
WTF
It's just way too pedo
It's literally just Depp smoking and flipping through books. That would have been fine if the movie was good visually and atmospherically, but it's entirely unremarkable in that regard as well.
pleb
Legitimately one of my favorite movies. It's comfy as fuck. The books it's based on is pretty good, too.
Johnny Depp is so hot in this movie. No homo.
All I remember about this film was the boobs.
But it is good visually and atmospherically?
Name a film you think is good visually and atmospherically.
the ninth gate was her vagoo
This guy was pretty based. He probably would have succeeded too had there not been a fucking forgery.
Wrong, Balkan would never have succeeded. The Devil had chosen Corso from the very beginning, if Balkan had ever gotten the right pages he would have been assassinated by Green Eyes or another agent of Hell
Why did he choose Corso and not Balkan?
It's the pleb pleb-filter. It's a trash movie, but tryhards think they can deflect any criticism by calling you an American with ADHD, even though the pace or the story of the movie has nothing to do with why it's bad.
because the Devil values curiousity and thirst for knowledge. He is after all, the one who gave knowledge to Adam and Eve. Balkan's motives were impure, he didn't desire knowledge or understanding he only wanted power
worse
capeshitter
Not wrong. Balkan only faltered because the Devil personally went out of his way to prevent it.
Balkan's motives weren't impure, to be sure, they were just too cemented. In contrast with Telfer, who was a pretentious priestess-type, he clearly loathed such things. That is altogether more admirable. He wanted the power, and he perhaps even deserved it, the forgery was made in response to Telfer, not Balkan. For all the viewer knows it was a complete error and Balkan was just in the wrong place at the right time.
Loved this movie. It would be fun to work with rare books. But Eyes Wide Shut completely overshadows it when it comes to movies about elites who do weird elitist shit.
fair enough, but I think that Corso's desire for knowledge is why he was chosen and why Green Eyes was protecting him. He didn't want power like Balkan and he wasn't a slavish ritualist like Telfer, he just wanted to know the truth
Everything Polanski made after the 70s is terrible. The Apartment, Rosemary's Baby, and The Tenant are 1000x better than this direct-to-video tier schlock.
>the Devil personally went out of his way to prevent it.
How?
wrong
SATANIC BLACK MAGIC
SICK SHIT
why did they mysteriously disappear at the end?
Too much random weird sex. If I can't watch it with my parents, then it's too awkward.
I think it has more to do with the old books aesthetic. Because they're involved is comforting(???)
bump
guys help. I can't like Johnny Depp anymore after seeing what he's done to himself in the past couple years. he was so cute in the Willy Wonka remake.
rent free baby
fun fact the guy who played Corso also plays the villain pedo as opposed to the hero pedo in the 1997 movie adaptation of Lolita
>posts in the thread
You thought about me. Now bend over.
I liked the book. The movie wasn't really bad, just disappointing.
any other kinos about obsession?
