i 8 sum pie

with a side of sneed

I got the ate some pie, but how does sqrt of -1 translate to "i" ?

yikes

That sigma makes it pretentious. If you can't make a good joke within set bounds then you should abandon it instead of reaching.

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Complex_number

should be able to "deduce" it from 8 and π

sample standard deviation factorial expectation value squared derivative

you'll learn in a few years when you get into high school

Epic! Can Simpsons tell me who I should vote for now???

WOAH THIS SHOW IS SO SMART

IMAGINARY NUMBERS BIATCH

LOL!

Heh, the joke is great. Needs a bit more sneed and it'd be kino

They taught me in school that if a number has a meanie (negative) on its head and its also wearing a silly hat (root) then you cant be a meanie wearing a hat, so they cancel each other out and you get an i, because the 1 has taken his hat off

I don't really care about new simpsons, but they should avoid making shitty math jokes. It's an insult to the old writers.

Sneed

burger education everybody

The joke is inherently pretentious because it isn't a joke; it's a basic substitution that derives it 'humor' from being able to say 'oh, I know what those symbols mean'. It's not even a pun since those at least have a setup or dual meaning to play off of audience expectations.

>but how does sqrt of -1 translate to "i"
"i" for imaginary number, as in, a number that cannot exist in the real world

The square root of -1 is an imaginary number represented with i.

Jesus Christ.

The square root of -1 is Err you fuckin nerd I just checked it on my calculator.

I don't speak sneed.

SNEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEED

Formerly yesterday’s math joke

It means "i". It's for imaginary numbers which just some jew thing made up just like the US Economy.

in live in europe actually

I see. Neat. Thanks for the clarification. Enjoy your (you)s.

imagine being this upset about user not knowing a mathematical curiosity nobody needs in real world applications

can I report this user as underage

It's just for made up spook math. A number that doesn't exist.

>If you can't make a good joke within set bounds
What do you see as the bounds that have been broken? I don't understand your objection at all.

you can smell the incel on the math "nerds" ITT

ok here we go the square root of any number has two possible solutions, positive and negative as multiplying two negatives results in a positive.
so what happens when we take the square root of a negative number well it's not possible right? you can't multiply a number by itself to make a negative number but math people don't like to be told what to do so they invented a new set of numbers called 'imaginary' numbers, if you think back to the number line you did at school as a horizontal line with all numbers on it stretching to infinity for some reason imaginary numbers are on a vertical number line where the lines cross at 0.
"i" is used in equations because writing "imaginary" would take too long.
imaginary numbers are actually quite useful in science for e.g. two dimensional representation like wave equations and shit.

sqrt of 1 is +-1, so sqrt of -1 is +-1i on the imaginary axis, simplify to "i" but really it should be abs(sqrt(-1))

I think part of the reason why it isn't funny at all is that everyone at least knows what the pi symbol is,
and from __ ___ ___ pie, and it was delicious it's easy to guess the rest from context.

I literally did not ever learn this in highschool either.

so many stinking virgins in this thread

>t. remedial math

there’s not once instance where the use of imaginary numbers produces a non-imaginary result
it’s completely useless

>ok here we go
holy fucking reddit, kill yourself you dumb faggot

>nobody needs in real world applications
t. burger flipper

>i 8 sum pi
>I ate some pie
Is Yea Forums really so stupid, as to make a sneed meme out of this?

I think imaginary numbers have some sort of real world application but it is in the realm of advanced physics and I never got that far.

>all these reddit "I f*cking love science" replies to your post

sneed

Since it is summation I would read it as "all the pie".

Having only symbols would make it just a translation and not mathematical. They wouldn't have simply written "i 8 3.1415...", so instead they made it so you actually had to something mathematical. You have to calculate what the first two are in order to pronounce it as words. The last one goes against the pattern because there you would actually lose something by calculating it, it would just be pi. Having pi there has the same issue in translation vs calculation but sum is completely useless and wouldn't be written down ever in any equation like that, unless it was to sum something up. So adding that there makes the "joke" inconsistent. A consistent version would be something tau divided by two, and just forgetting about the "sum" part since that will always disappear after calculating it.

Oh shit after writing this I realize the picture isn't an equation. I thought it was addition but apparently there are just spaces there. My justification of it being a joke is because I thought there were + inbetween each term. If there was, the joke would be the double meaning from calculating that equation: the more obvious numerical answer and the literal one you would get partway through.

Imaginary numbers go towards complex numbers, and complex numbers are just a more easily manipulated form of planar coordinates

What a tragic post

Are you retarded? What's i^2?

just drawing attention to two MUH SCIENCE redditfags that dont know how to reply to specific posts

>what is electrical engineering

cool now give me a real world usecase where i^2 is REQUIRED

See

You don't have to care about nonsense like comedy, consistency, logic or math. That doesn't mean it's tragic if someone else does.

Imaginary two cubed epsilon pi?

I thought this board was filled with wannabe or failed filmmakers/critics
Now i see its full of bitter engineering virgins

the first time it didn't devolve into sneed posting by catching the autsits at being autistic with some genuine post/maybe bait
you deserve this (You)

I have been on Yea Forums since before Yea Forums even existed. I just chose not to quote any particular post.

i 8 sum pi

That's sigma though, right?

> imagine being this upset about user not knowing a mathematical curiosity nobody needs in real world applications

So he wrote, on his compact electronic device.

>american education

Did Simpsons have any other jokes like that? I remember Futurama had some but I can't recall any examples.

here
Since you autists can't help yourselves but obsess over this post, here's some more to obsess over:
I'm half-german, half-russian 34 year old.
Been lurking and replying since 2006 or so.
I have a german university degree in graphics, design and communication and I program for fun (I'm self-employed).
I like movies, anime and videogames and am currently single. My most cherished relationships are my friends, my family and my 2 CAT.
I was curious about the "i" thing and despite expecting just the usual sneedthread I received some genuinely friendly and fun explanations plus the usual autists that like to reply to "popular" posts.

Now here comes the hook, anons - I wasn't planning on triggering anyone with my knowledge gap. I'm sorry to disappoint my fellow anons, but let's be civil now and let this thread die. I think OP's confusion has been thoroughly dealt with.

I F*CKING LOVE SCIENCE

hmm... *thinks*
