Five penguins in a group aren't gonna get swallowed all at once. When that Orca comes close they're gonna scatter and that Orca will have to pick one of them, giving about each of them a 20% chance of getting eaten and an 80% chance of survival. That survival rate only goes up when the group is bigger.
A lone penguin doesn't have that opportunity. The Orca is zeroed in on it and that penguin can do whatever the fuck it wants, it's getting eaten. There's a reason basically every herd animal groups together for safety.
