Very high quality film on its own. Top notch SFX, great story, mostly good acting across the board.

The best criticism of the movie is that it's clearly intended to be the start of a story rather than a whole story. It ends on a cliffhanger and honestly won't go down as an excellent film unless it gets sequels.

With How to Train Your Dragon and Captain Marvel? Not likely.

The visuals and action are top notch. Guarantee that the eyes, if they bothered you before, will stop being an issue within the first 5 minutes of the film. The world is great and the design will suck you in.

The possible issues you might have though include: its breakneck pacing (fits 2 volumes of the manga into one movie, so a lot going on with little time to dwell on it), and the fact it's more of a prologue than a complete self-contained movie. On a more personal opinion level, the dialogue at times can be very cheesy and anime like (makes sense considering the source). You might cringe a couple points, but just keep in mind those scenes have their purpose for Alita's arc.

But if you can embrace the cheese, and get hype for the overall world and story, you will love this movie and love Alita. Guaranteed. Trust this man and the 20 years of passion he put in to bring his waifu (and by extension anime) to life.

We also look into what it means to be a parent, and how to go about the duty properly. So when I say "cheesiness", I really just mean the movie treats itself sincerely and earnestly, no matter what the dialogue is. Some of it can still be a bit much, depending on your tolerance level for such things though.

The city is a futuristic steampunk city with lots of mixed ethnicities like BR2049, if that bothers you I'd avoid the movie

If I liked a movie I usually watch it in cinemas again to catch things I missed the first time around or to better appreciate the cinematography/music/editing etc. This normally applies more to arthouse or niche films where you probably won’t fully appreciate it on first viewing but I thought alita was entertaining enough in 2D to warrant me trying it out in 3D imax for the experience (the last two imax films I’ve watched were TDKR and then Avatar, ironically enough).
