You're right. The machine doesn't work. We never see how Angier's trick really works. It's a metaphor for filmmaking in general. Angier's trick is a stand-in for how filmmakers work their craft - they know you *want* to believe, *want* to invest in their illusions.

That whole incident with the hats is the clue. It's why it's the first thing we're shown in the film as a voice-over of Angier (I think, maybe Hooker) says, "Are you watching closely?"

If you *are* watching closely, that story is later revealed to be contained in the fake journal Angier gives to Borden. It's him paying him back for doing the same thing to Angier earlier in the film - taking him on his pointless chase to America. Angier returns the favor, revealing to Borden that Angier's own trick led him on a similar pointless quest that landed him in prison. Angier is mocking Borden with that story, lying to him, knowing that he too will believe it because Angier's obsession married to his superior showmanship finally surpassed Borden.

the entire tesla plot might be a complete lie. Besides the machine itself, there is no tangible evidence of Tesla's involvement. No other witness than Angier. It could be yet another trick inside a trick.
