I recently rewatched the movie with Mann’s commentary. The point he was trying to make was that Pacino was so dedicated to his job that he kept burning his personal life. But I think he made a mistake in making the wife character unlikeable

I put off watching this movie for so long because of its running time but I finally watched it last weekend and it was as good as everyone said it is, didn't feel too long at all.

But they are? The movie made a big deal out of "bros vs hos". Trejo betrays the crew because they had his girl, pacino's cunt was always bitching because he was a workaholic, kilmer's girl saved him in the end, and deniro would have escaped with his bitch but decided to avenge his bros. It was almost like the theme of the movie was that they did what they did for the bitches. But i may be reading too much into it

shouldve cut out a chunk of the side women drama and had 15% more waingro scenes.

Hands down worth it. One of those movies where you take an intermission.

The point is that Pacino has at least some genuine selfless compassion for both his woman and the daughter who is fucked in the head because of her mother. DeNiro on the other hand primarily wants the relationship to fill an increasing void of loneliness in his life, but ultimately hesitates only for a moment before severing the connection permanently (and puts himself in that situation because he couldn't resist tying up loose ends and getting revenge).

Sort of, he was at risk mostly because of her in the first place. And she was everything for Kilmer. It might sound lame but the fact is that true romantic love is a feature of men far more than women. Kilmer lives, but how he'd overcome the loss of Theron is a story in itself. (If anything, this aspect makes Kilmer's character more sympathetic than what he'd be IRL).

Well, yeah that's something men do in real life, all the fucking time. Its part of the nature of men and resisting it entirely, the way DeNiro's character does, is not natural.

nothing about this movie is gay, quite the contrary. Heat is testosterone the movie. You see two dominate figures confronting each other. Hanna keeps fucking up everything around him while Neil has the discipline to control it.
