Why did horror transition from scary monsters to spooky invisible ghosts?

Why did horror transition from scary monsters to spooky invisible ghosts?

People don't find gothic horror type monsters that scary anymore and you have to put more effort into being creative to make a good modern movie out of them. It's much easier to throw together some "found footage" paranormal ghost budget film that's much more low effort.

Around the time Hollywood realised it's cheaper to not pay artists and costume designers

satelite images, phones, digital cameras and the internet made people feel thst every inch on earth was maped so there was no place for monsters to live, leaving ghosts the spot
...
...
or
...
a ghost movie is just cheaper

I saw Wishmaster the other day.
>Robert Englund
>Kane Hodder
>Tony Todd
>Reggie Bannister
>Tom Savini
>Angus Scrimm
>Ted Raimi
There were more. It was wild. Is part 2 as good?

nope

Sadly, Hollywood decided to trade the very simple, cathartic, tried and true formula of the slasher movie - sinners die, pure girl lives and there's some awesome practical gore and perky tits in the middle - for empty psychological horror that leaves you feeling like shit, and misanthropic "WE'RE THE REAL MONSTERS" bullshit steeped in the politics of whatever idiotic cause-of-the-week Twittertards write BuzzFeed think pieces about. The message used to be "don't do drugs/wear a condom/don't be an asshole/tip your waitress". Now everything is some pretentious allegory about the existential strife of having a Republican neighbor with a tidy lawn or the Western oppression of the indigenous peoples of Whogivesafuckistan. The joke? There was a total of 55 deaths from school shootings in the US during the 80s. There's been 91 deaths from school shootings in the US since 2015.

Why do ghosts have a near omnipotent presence? Like an angry murdered spirit has power over technology, and doors, and makes walls bleed, and gets to appear wherever it wants. But why? The STD from It Follows had to get to you at least before it raped you in half.

It's unironically cellphones.
The only thing that protect you from calling, texting or sending twitter direct messages to the police would be some paranormal invisible shit.

In old movies if you were being pursued by some evil big monster, you could just call someone using your phone, hell, you could even livestream it before dying.

inb4 going to areas with no cell reception
Could work but you can also shoot them. The real evil for people nowadays is white people, trump and gender inequality.

Part 2 is kind of entertaining. But don't go past there, though.

this is like a Kevin Smith character rant

You just have to know where to look to find good Horror monsters/killers today.

Yes there are a lot of spooky ghost popularity at the moment. But I'll give you a few modern horrors that don't.

>Hellfest
It got a bunch of criticism from the zoomer crowd who prefer ghosts. But it's the closest thing to a classic 80s slasher there is. Absolutely brilliant cinematography and silent stalking killer reminiscent of the original Halloween. I really liked the movie and feel. It feels like a traditional slasher and the final scene is great.

>Halloween 2018
It is the perfect sequel.

>It 2017 and Evil Dead 2013
Perfect remakes, respects the source without being a carbon copy.

>The Nun
A modern day Evil Dead. If you are a fussy who can't handle jumpscares then it's not for you.

Another great slasher

And we have Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark coming this summer.

Thanks, chums.

The House That Jack Built, Hereditary and A Quiet Place are good too. I'll check it out Hell Fest and The Nun. Got anymore recs, m8?

Plenty of non paranormal ways around cellphones.

>set the film in an era where cellphones didn't exist

>set in a place where no one would believe it even with a video like a horror theme park ala Hellfest or during Halloween or Urban Exploring

>Break the phone

>Lose the phone

>Have the phone be hacked

>Have the characters not realize what is going on at first

>Make the creature so powerful or numerous that police can't help like the Blob or Zombies

It's easy.

Women make up the bulk of normie horror fans. They want jump scares and stupid shit like that. So fake CGI ghost shit are perfect.

Studios rather cater to this demo and religate the real horror shit to indie movies that rarely even get theater release

the nun was trash

>The Nun
Honest to God the absolute worst horror movie I've seen in years. Opinion discarded.
>having the gall to compare it to Evil Dead
Eat a bag of dicks, you heretic piece of shit asshole.

Strangers, and Strangers They Prey at Night

Stranger Things

Apostle

The Witch

The Autopsy of Jane Doe

Don't Breathe

Krampus
(If you like a little comedy with your horror)

The Haunting of Hill House
(Yes it is ghost shit but it's got actually creepy good looking ghosts)

Green Inferno

Pussy confirmed

The zombie nun is straight up out of Evil Dead.
The dark humor is straight up Evil Dead.

wishmaster is just like hellraiser in that the 1st is decent, then every sequel gets worse and worse to the point of straight to dvd shit

Ghosts are so fucking lame. The minute I see a movie is about ghosts or possessions I skip it. That shit is not scary anymore, it is so overdone and they’re STILL DOING IT!

its easier to make, therefore a safer bet for the studios. Horror is a tricky genre in that if you want it to be scary it needs an R rating, but that cuts off half of the people who want to see it, probably more then those over the age of 18. Thats why nobody takes risks with horror anymore and they do remakes and reboots that are basic as fuck
Also, ghosts are whats in right now. Before that it was zombies thanks to the walking dead. The 1970s and 80s had slashers because serial killers were a new thing in pop culture. Before that you had monster movies thanks to thread of nuclear weapons or European folkore coming over to the US. Ghosts are just the thing for right now, hopefully it comes full circle and we go back to killers or monsters again

yeah but some of the places with no cell phone reception or wifi is even scarier because you're so accustomed to having communication whenever you want. Go through a place like the texas killing fields, the outback of Australia or the highway of tears in Canada. Its like being on mars and very nerve wracking. I would love to see more horror movies in scenic nature settings that look beautiful but are contrasted by horrible events
>just shoot them though
guns can be used correctly as well. The strangers worked ok with this, they had a fucking shotgun but were so inept it didnt matter. Then you have youre next were "yeah that badass survivliast bitch coming through" character kicks everyone ass. Its not scary anymore. You need to find a balance were a weapon is treated like a tool rather than a toy. You need a setting that works appropriately and you need believable characters that struggle. This would require work though and hollywood doesnt like putting work into scary movies when they can push out generic cannon fodder for 2 hours

The ghosts are meant to draw on economic anxieties and anxieties about life in general as a result. Those classic monsters were scarier before America died on 9/11 and before it was buried in the global financial crisis because no one could comprehend how there could be monsters like that. Life was too good. The concept of a monster harming people despite being able to get gainful employment, graduate without debt, afford healthcare, a house, and so on was inconceivable. In a post 9/11 and post global financial crisis world many people would see those monsters as heroes and practically begging for them to exist to come and liberate them from the nightmare the world has become. "Maybe Michael Myers will kill me, but what if he would kill my boss too?" "Leatherface killing women? Well I've been rejected by so many women on Tinder that statistically he'd probably be killing one of those bitches!" You see what I mean? The monsters are representations of the times. Ghosts are the monsters now because society's fears are embodied by them.

Halloween 2018 sucked.

Halloween 2018 success showed studios that slashers are still profitable

Look at biggest selling horror today, “IT” remake. It’s basically Cenobite clown killing kids not some gay ghost or possession

>If I disagree then it's bait
>literally impossible to not have your exact same whit opinions

>Hellfest
ADHD zoomer trash.
>Halloween 2018
There's only one legitimately great Halloween movie and that's the first one.
>It 2017 and Evil Dead 2013
Jumpscares and gore can't replace quality.
>The Nun
This has to be bait.
>31
More ADHD zoomer trash.

Drink bleach, my man.

Twilight happened.

Hollywood began trying to make horror elements "sexy". Then, when the vampire and werewolf bullshit became stale, they tried incorporating other supernatural beings and women as protagonists. It completely ruined what was once a great genre. Nowadays, it's a bunch of "YOU GO, GIRL!" recycled garbage.
>case in point

Zoomers hated Hellfest though.
The only positive reviews for it are from people over 30.

The rest of your opinions are pure ass trash and heavily hipster.
