Target audience and filling a niche which had gone unexploited. The inspiration for MMPR was Japanese with their sentai shows which had been well established. There really wasn't anything similar to this in the west until Power Rangers exclusively targeted towards kids and will all kinds of merchandise tied in to (e.g. dolls, costumes etc.). Kimberly was pretty hot back then especially for a lot of young lads in that age range. Further, we should add it had cross-gender appeal by having female co-stars as well - this made it marketable to both boys and girls of the same age range which for an action show is quite remarkable.

I was only around for the first two series (the original and the one with car headlights on their helmets).

It was probably just a fun, stimulating, colorful live action super hero show, so it makes sense why kids liked it.

When I was a kid I idolized the green ranger, so it was really disappointing to discover that he's an asshole to, along with directors and producers, bullied the blue ranger to suicide attempts for being gay.
