Nootka is just strategically placed to make lots of money whoever controls it via trade, most specifically with East Asia. Or so the show's plot claims.

Everyone wants the island because it's a perfect trade post to China. And because of its location whoever has rights to the island has rights to Pacific Northwest coast. In the show the Brits and Americans are still drawing up borders, which is why they both want it.

I watched both shows and preferred Taboo

Taboo is set in 1814 and this is what American territory consisted of at the time, Nootka Sound was sold to Delaney via treaty so which country owned it would determine where the new border would be.

Taboo is one of the best shows I've seen this decade. The writing, the acting, the cinematography, just everything is spot on. I am sad to learn that there will be no season two until 2020 at the earliest.

in the original script he did but tom hardy loved his character so much he refused to be killed off so when S2 was beginning to be filmed tom hardy kept showing up in costume and disrupting the filming, he even went so far as to harass the actor who plays arthur calling him up and showing up at his house while still in costume and talking like his character Alfie Solomons until the producers of peaky blinders had no choice but to reshoot the ending of his death and bring him back for S2
