I think it helps it wasn't "advertised" as much.
Like, my problem with a lot of the more recent "diversity" efforts is that the people behind them feel like they think they just pulled off something that was never even attempted before, that by simply featuring a minority in their movie they're changing the world or some bullshit.
With older stuff like Lethal Weapon, Alien, T2, etc. it just feels like they did it because they thought it would be cool, no pretense, so it feels more sincere, and thus, more endearing.

It was subtle and it had to be. The west was still overwhelmingly white. If non whites got uppity they could have easily been put in their place and made people think twice about bringing more in. They knew to keep quiet.
But today there is no need as most demographics are certainty for a white minority. They can now just brag about replacing whites

Yes, people back then had mostly moved past race baiting bullshit, but then Obama and his band of intersectional marxists came to power because of the jewish orchestrated 2008 financial crisis and proceeded to set back race relations in America by 50 years.
