Agreed, I'm no kino expert nor am I a pleb (probably), but I watched this a couple of weeks ago and thought it was at best average. Phoenix was pretty good, but acting haunted and saying fuck all is hardly a huge stretch for him, it's his oeuvre. Some of the cinematography was great, the drowning sequence was particularly good (albeit, very similar to dozens of other similar interpretations), but nothing ground breaking. The script was, at best, functional if not overly sparse. However, the main fault was the lack of plot and clarity in story progress. I didn't need Pheonix backstory flashbacks explained like some have complained about, he was clearly suffering complex PTSD, nor did I need explaining how he managed to get into the "finders" business or how that world worked. Unfortunately, the actual reasoning behind what was happening with the girl at any given time was barely legible, partly due to mumbled dialogue and partly due the the script. Ultimately it was an incredibly simple story, badly told with some good acting and fairly decent cinematography. 5/10.

As someone who is mentally ill I thought it captured what it's like to suffer from anxiety really well, the car scene had me feeling extremely uncomfortable because it's a feeling I know too well

Could be worse, could be better.
