The amount of animation that isn't designed for predominantly child audiences is despairingly small, and that has created a spiraling effect whereby most animators don't bother creating more mature work because they don't think they'll gain an audience for it- adults will dismiss it as children's fare, and parents of children won't like watching their children be subject to seeing truly dark subject matter like the Holodomor or the Rape of Nanking, no matter how well animated.

At best, we get some shows and creators that pushes the upper boundary of what may be expected of expected audience maturity- there's no comparing Caillou or Spongebob to Tokyo Ghoul or Eureka Seven, for example, the latter of which are clearly meant for a teen/young adult audience- but at the end of the day? For every Grave of the Fireflies we get for adult audiences, we have a hundred Teen Titans GO! series which are juvenile in every sense of the word.
