He kind of is. Half his arguments with Amelia he is either wrong or unable to express himself in a normal manner. Amelia manipulates him and he is an oblivious dumb sack of rocks. He is just good at true detecting. Sometimes. Kind of.
That's his character and it makes sense that he obsesses over the keeds. It's the one thing that gives him any sort of self gratification and Amelia is walking all over him, hence his discomfort.
Where I'm getting at is that his character is consistent and makes sense so what is it that bothers you?
